Streets And Public Safety Bond Election Called For November

In an effort to improve streets and safety, the Glendale City Council has approved a General Obligation (G.O.) bond election to be held in November 2023.

Residents will vote on two proposed bonds. One is for street and intersection improvements and the other is for public safety projects.

The first question asks for approval of an $82 million bond directed to critical street and intersection improvements to reduce congestion, save time, and enhance safety for all roadway users and pedestrians. Projects include constructing street and intersection safety improvements, congestion reduction, street widening, street signage, lighting and landscaping.

The second question asks for approval of a $78 million bond directed to essential public safety projects to keep emergency response times low and address important safety issues such as crime and homelessness. Investments include constructing, modernizing and improving fire stations, police stations, police and fire training academies, police department forensics laboratories and other public safety facilities.

The G.O. bonds are paid for through secondary property tax. Assuming property values remain stable, there will not be a tax rate increase. This will be an all-mail election. All residents registered to vote will be mailed a ballot starting October 11, 2023. The deadline to register to vote is October 10, 2023.
