Dust Complaints

Dust is one of the main components of the “brown cloud" air pollution that continues to hover over the Valley. Dirt tracked onto paved surfaces contributes significantly to Maricopa County’s particulate matter, referred to as (PM10) air pollution.

Dust control complaints are regulated by the Maricopa County Air Quality Department.

Although regulations require everyone to minimize emissions from soil disturbing activities, projects that have a total disturbed surface area of 1/10 acre or more are required to obtain a valid permit before the soil is disturbed.

Who to Call
Construction activities disturbing the soil within the city’s limits should all be referred to Maricopa County Dust Control by calling (602) 372-2703, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Or, visit them online by clicking here.

Weed Abatement
Weed abatement has the potential to create fugitive dust which in turn creates potential health problems for everyone. The Maricopa County’s Air Quality Department has a document providing guidance for those who wish to conduct weed removal activities. More information.
