Glendale Summer Band Series Returns
Posted on 05/27/2022

Glendale’s favorite summer tradition is back live! The Glendale Summer Band is about to start its 56th year, beginning Thursday, June 2. The city’s Summer Band is the longest-running community band in Arizona and the ages of the musicians span several generations. Music lovers of all ages will be entertained by this amazing band, comprised of about 100 volunteer musicians.

Due to the pandemic, summer band had no performances in 2020 and played virtual concerts in 2021. They’re now looking forward to sharing their inspiring renditions of everything from marches to polkas and movie medleys once again to a live audience.

Nicole Krug, the communications project manager for Glendale’s Mayor Jerry Weiers, has played the mallets in the percussion section of Summer Band for 18 years.

“I am thrilled to finally be back and see the other band members,” said Nicole Krug. “We get energy from being together and performing music for those who come out to enjoy our concerts, so not being able to have that interaction was a lonely feeling.”

The five-week concert series takes place each Thursday at 8 p.m., beginning June 2 through June 30 at the Murphy Park Amphitheatre, located at 58th and Glenn Drive.

“I think this will have a positive impact on Glendale and our audience members who come from all parts of the Valley,” continued Krug.

The band was formed in 1966 and originally played at O’Neil Park, prior to their move over to Murphy Park once the amphitheater was built for the band.

“We know our band members are thrilled to come back together and play,” said the city of Glendale special events administrator, Heidi Barriga. “Our entire community looks forward to spending their summer nights outside while enjoying some great tunes.”
