Exercise Science Intern

Description of internship: The intern will be available to assist in developing exercise programs for fire department employees.  They will have the opportunity to go to fire stations and teach exercise technique and develop individual exercise programs.  They will work in the Fire department health center alongside doctors, PA’s, nurses and physical therapists to assist in annual physicals.  The work schedule is flexible when working at fire stations.  The intern should be available to meet with employees both at fire stations and at the health center. 

Preferred education and experience: Interns should be in their last year of education at ASU and prepared to work on their own.  They should have a good understanding of exercise technique and types.  They should have a working knowledge of anatomy and physiology as well as biomechanics.  They must be self-motivated and flexible with scheduling.  The intern must be able to drive to and from various fire stations and to the health center. 

Define specific learning objectives and skills interns will gain from this experience: The intern will learn to work in an ever-changing environment.  They will work with a different type of athlete, the firefighter.  We have an entirely different set of needs and skills than the average person.  The intern will learn how to write and execute an exercise program and be able to monitor the progress of the people they are teaching.  They will have the opportunity to see the inner workings of the fire department.  They will have the staff of the health center to assist them and to learn from.

Nutrition Intern

Description of internship: The intern will have the opportunity to work directly with firefighters to develop nutrition plans.  They will assist with group discussions about nutrition and teach firefighters about healthy eating habits.  The intern will be available to assist firefighters with individualized eating plans.  They will also work in the fire department health center to give consultations when firefighters are there for their physicals.  The intern must be able to drive to fire stations as well as the health center.  They should be flexible in work hours and days. 

Preferred education and experience:  The intern should be in their last year of education at ASU.  The intern must have a strong knowledge of nutrition and food plans.  They must be able to execute a meal plan and communicate it well. 

Define specific learning objectives and skills interns will gain from this experience: The intern will have the opportunity to work with a diverse population of firefighters.  They will have the ability to see the inner workings of the fire department and the health center.  They will gain knowledge of how to prepare a meal plan and watch the progress of the plan they have put in place.  They will have the ability to effect a large group of people and make a positive impact on their lives.
