Volunteer Position Description
Position Title: Book Shelving Volunteer
Responsible To: Circulation Dept. Volunteer Coordinator and, if applicable, Glendale Public Library staff.
Job Summary: Organizes, straightens and shelves library materials on carts and library collection including books, CDs, DVDs and periodicals.
Essential Functions: Duties include shelving library materials in numerical and alphabetical order, shelf read collections for accuracy, face books on the shelf so they are neat in appearance, put books on carts in fine sort order, report damaged materials to staff, fill out paperwork pertaining to duties finished each shift, assist staff with check-in of items and other duties as needed in circulation workroom.
Time Required: Minimum of 2 hours per week. Days and times volunteered are dependent on library needs and availability of volunteer.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to organize materials in alphabetical and numerical order. Knowledge of the Dewey decimal system is helpful. Ability to interact with patrons and work effectively and cooperatively with library staff is necessary.
Working Conditions: Volunteers will perform their duties in the circulation workroom with staff and other volunteers and also on the public floor of the library.
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum age for volunteering in this position is 16. Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time and perform lifting and shelving of heavy materials while standing, squatting and bending. Volunteer must be able to push a cart filled with heavy books the distance of the library several times per shift.
