Volunteer Position Description
Position Title: ESL Tutor (Conversational Group Leader)
Responsible To: Velma Teague Administrative Librarian, and if applicable, Velma Teague Library staff.
Job Summary: The volunteer will help non-native English speakers build their English skills and strengthen their conversational confidence by leading participants in group conversations on a variety of subjects pertinent to daily living.
Essential Functions: Ability to interact pleasantly with patrons. The volunteer must possess a strong command of the English language, plus good planning and organizational skills, and be able to work independently.
Time Required: Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The hours may shift if needed to fit volunteer availability and library hours.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have the ability to facilitate group discussions, analyze situations, and draw conclusions while leading sessions. He/she must possess sensitivity and cultural awareness, plus creative skills for planning practical and interesting meetings.
Working Conditions: Works in the library meeting area with non-native English speakers for ongoing 8 week sessions.
Minimum Qualifications: Volunteer must be 20 years or older. He/she must exhibit a strong command of the English language plus be fluent in at least one foreign language. Must be able to pass criminal background check.
