Writer in Residence Fall Session to Offer Free Events for Feedback
Do you have a story to tell but are unsure where to start or how to make your words flow on the page? Then visit some of the city of Glendale’s libraries for the FREE Writer in Residence Fall Session, which kicks off Aug. 4 and runs through October.
Two distinguished local poets, Rosemarie Dombrowski and Shawnte Orion will aim to inspire budding or experienced writers in a series of workshops and one-on-one coaching and feedback sessions. The first offering, Writer in Residence Workshop: Creative Writing Inspired By the Cinema, will be held from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. on Aug. 4 at the Velma Teague Library at 7010 N. 58th Ave. Orion will guide participants through editing innovations that classic film directors used and help them apply those concepts to contemporary writing via interactive prompts that embrace chance, mistake and purpose. Attendees also will take part in playful exercises. Orion will also hold one-on-one writing consultations through October, starting at 10 a.m. on Aug. 9 at Foothills Library at 19055 N. 57th Ave. Registration is required.
Dombrowski will share insight during the Writer in Residence Workshop: Poetic Medicine: Writing for Wellness from 3:30-4:45 p.m. on Aug. 23 at Foothills Library. This workshop will highlight the ways in which the reading and writing of poetry (aka Poetic Medicine) can improve mental and physical health. Dombrowski will guide participants through studies about the effectiveness of poetic medicine as a means to combat stress, aging, and illness, as well as brief poetic readings, discussions, and writing exercises. Dombrowski also will hold many one-on-one consultations through October, starting at 10 a.m. on Aug. 13 at the Foothills Library. Registration is required.

Glendale’s Writer in Residence program has been offered for many years but this is the first time poets will be teaching the workshops and providing the one-on-one consultations, said Lauren Kalt, a Foothills Library librarian.
“These popular events attract adults young and old, and all genres and experience levels are welcome!” Kalt said. “Sometimes they bring manuscripts for feedback, ask how to get published and reap the benefits of coaching for their writing projects. It’s a fun, safe and non-judgmental space to explore any type of writing.”
Dombrowski is the inaugural Poet Laureate of Phoenix, as well as the founding editor of rinky dink press and the founding director of Revisionary Arts, a non-profit organization that facilitates healing and self-care through poetry. She also has published four collections of poetry and she is a teaching professor at Arizona State University.
Orion is the author of “Gravity & Spectacle,” a collaboration with photographer Jia Oak Baker and “The Existential Cookbook.” He also is the editor for rinky dink press, and his poems have appeared in “Threepenny Review,” “Barrelhouse,” “Sugar House Review,” “New York Quarterly” and on a vinyl record with San Francisco band Sweat Lodge.
Glendale’s Writer in Residence program is sponsored with a grant from the Arizona State Library, via the Institute for Museums and Library Services.
