Historic Sahuaro Ranch Volunteer Opportunities

Our Mission:

To preserve a historic site where the community participates in the ongoing development of educational and social experiences that connect Glendale residents and visitors to the past and to each other.

The Historic Sahuaro Ranch is a preserved historic ranch dating back to 1886 and is currently operated by the City of Glendale. The Ranch has 17 acres, 13 historic buildings, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

We are looking for dedicated volunteers passionate about the preservation of Glendale’s history and excited to share what they know with others!

Flexible schedules available and training provided for all volunteer opportunity areas:

  • Main House Tour Guide
  • Education Assistant
  • Special Events Assistant
  • Animal Care Assistant

All volunteers are fingerprinted and issued a City of Glendale ID badge.

This badge should be worn during all volunteer hours.

A staff shirt may be provided for events.


Lead tours of the Historic Sahuaro Ranch Main House for the general public during regular opening hours.

Provide historic information and interpretation of the Main House and the objects inside it. 

Training program and mentor with other Tour Guides provided.

Preferred Skills: Interest in history and presenting accurate information.  Comfortable with public speaking.


Assist with school and group tours of the Ranch.

Lead educational programs and craft activities related to the history and use of the various buildings around the property.

Preferred Skills: Interest in history and presenting accurate information. 

Comfortable with public speaking and working with children.



Assist with bird (peafowl, and guinea fowl) feeding and monitoring program. 

Provide food and water at designated feeding stations. 

Monitor station condition, track feeding supplies, and assist with cleaning. 

Observe and report conditions of throughout park. 

Assist with animal care and special projects (such as population counting) as needed.

Preferred Skills: Comfortable with animals. Working independently.


Participate in planning, implementation, and evaluation of special events at Sahuaro Ranch. 

Tasks include event set-up, event activity staffing, event take-down and clean-up, and event summary and evaluation.

Preferred Skills: Planning and organization skills.
