New projects coming to Glendale

The Office of Economic Development celebrated a very successful 2014, assisting in the location or expansion of 13 companies and 1,826 jobs. These new projects will occupy over 1.1 million square feet of space in the city. Projects include Progressive Leasing, New West Oil, Palo Verde Oncology and many more. 2015 promises to be an exciting year too! Over 1,000 jobs have been created since the beginning of the fiscal year in July.

 

 

2015 Pro Bowl and Super Bowl XLIX Recap

For the first time ever in Arizona, the City of Glendale hosted the 2015 Pro Bowl on January 25th which set the stage for a week’s worth of entertainment activities culminating in Super Bowl XLIX on February 1st which attracted approximately 100,000 people to the city’s Sports and Entertainment District. Throughout the week, the area was bustling with several multi-day events including Westgate Entertainment District’s free Super Music Series, Nike Speed Zone at Tanger, the 1st Annual CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) Chili Bowl at Cabela’s, the inaugural DIRECTV Super Fan Fest, and numerous private parties.  Glendale even had the opportunity to host a live production of E! Entertainment Television’s popular comedy show, The Soup.  Hosting national events in our city creates unique opportunities for our residents and the business community alike.  One reported success from this year’s national events is from Westgate who reported a profound positive impact for tenants citing sales increases on average of 350% over the same week in January 2014.  We would like to offer our special thanks to those key stakeholders whose contributions generated a huge success for our community.

 

 

Arizona SciTech Festival Comes to Glendale

The Chocolate Affaire was held January 30-31st in Downtown Glendale.

Thousands of visitors were able to enjoy a variety of chocolate confections, in addition to a “Super Street” with sports related games and activities. Among all of the sweet activities and vendors at the Chocolate Affaire was the Arizona SciTech booth. Activities included hands on demonstrations around the chemistry and density of chocolate, as well as many other fun facts about the science of chocolate.

The Arizona SciTech festival offers opportunities for all ages to learn about how science affects our everyday lives. To see for yourself, take a few moments to check out the SciTech website at azscitech.com.

 

 

New Healthcare Options coming to Glendale

Glendale is pleased to welcome the Westgate Healthcare campus to the city. The site is located directly south of St. Joseph’s Westgate and will offer over 200,000 square feet of medical office space, skilled nursing facilities and surgery centers. Thunderbird Senior Living Project

Located at 53rd Ave and Thunderbird Rd near Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, Thunderbird Senior Living will be undergoing a major renovation by Plaza Companies. The 339 unit property will be undergoing interior and exterior changes, bringing the property up to the highest standard. Freedom Senior Management will operate the facility.

 

 

Bell Road is Booming

Bell Road Project Development

Bell Road is one of the city’s major economic corridors, boasting many retail and office developments. And new projects continue to develop in the area. Arrowhead Skilled Nursing facility is under construction at Bell Road and 75th Ave. This 3 story 75,000 square feet facility will offer patient Bell Road Corridor Projectrooms and rehabilitation services. Just down the road Deseret Industries is constructing a 70,000 square foot retail store, employment resource center, missions office and family counseling center. These new projects will bring even more activity to one of the valley’s most dynamic areas.  

 

 

Westgate City Center Garners Four New Restaurants

In advance of the Super Bowl, Westgate City Center opened four new restaurants.

  • Fractured Prune, a doughnut shop opened near AMC Theatres.
  • Opa Life Greek Cafe, serves Greek-inspired sandwiches, salads, appetizers and more. It is in a 2,501-square-foot space overlooking the center's Fountain Park.
  • Hot N Juicy Crawfish. The 3,926-square-foot seafood restaurant also has a Tempe location.
  • Crave Modern Waffle Sandwiches. The restaurant, in a 2,500-square-foot space, serves gourmet Belgian waffles for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert.

Ironwood Cancer Treatment and Research Center Opens

Ironwood Cancer Treatment Center, with locations throughout the East Valley, opened their first West Valley location in Glendale in the Talavi Business Park. The Glendale location is already treating about 85 patients daily and they can accommodate up to 150 patients. Treatment includes both chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

 

 

Century 21 Northwest Expands

Century 21 ExpansionGlendale based Century 21 Northwest has expanded in the city, relocating from a leased 4,000 square foot office at 67th Ave and Cactus to purchasing a 13,000 square foot facility on 59th Ave south of Bell Rd. The new facility offers the employees a full size fitness facility, gourmet kitchen, common collaboration areas, meeting rooms, and private offices. 

CEO John Crow realized that creating new business opportunities would enhance the level of service at its core business and over the past few years the company has diversified into other related industries. The first development was opening a home inspection company, One Avenue, two and a half years ago. Subsequently a construction company, Fix My House; a collection company, PM Rent Recovery; and a Marketing company, Striventa Business Solutions were created to provide value to their clients..

In a mere four years the company has grown from 5 full time employees and 15 agents to 35 full time employees and 60 agents and continues to grow every month. The company opened the doors of its new facility in mid-February.

 

 

Glendale Employers are Hiring

Three Glendale employers recently held job fairs at their locations. Empereon Constar hosted a job fair March 25th and is looking to hire 150 people. The company employs 1,500 people at five locations throughout the country, with the Glendale location being their newest facility. Progressive Leasing is one of Glendale’s newest companies, providing lease to own services. The company held a job fair on March 17.  And one of Glendale’s largest employers, CSAA, hosted its job fair on March 18. We are very excited to see these quality companies continue to grow in Glendale and welcome the new employees to our city!

 

 

Midwestern Open House

Midwestern University, Arizona’s largest medical school, is hosting an Open House at its campus near 59th Avenue and Loop 101 on Thursday April 9th from 5pm to 7 pm for students interested in healthcare. Midwestern students will conduct campus tours while faculty and staff will be available to answer questions on degree programs and admissions. Glendale 4th Quarter Building Occupancy Glendale Growth

Industrial vacancy rates in Glendale remain well below the metro Phoenix average at about 5.6%. Currently 10.3 million square feet of space is occupied, while just over 600,000 square feet is vacant. However the city does have built to suit options available and with the speed and efficiency of the Glendale team, industrial users can find a site that meets their needs.

The office vacancy rate in the City is trending in the right direction, dropping by a full percent. Much of Glendale’s office vacancy is concentrated in a few larger buildings; as these buildings become occupied, Glendale’s vacancy rate will show a marked changed.

Retail vacancy rates have continued to decline, from 7.8% in 3rd quarter 2014 to 7.1% in the 4th quarter. The city now has less than a million square feet vacant, a level not seen since the beginning of 2008

Spotlight on - Retail and Entertainment

Glendale is home to many unique retail and entertainment options located throughout the city. The Sports and Entertainment District, off of Loop 101 and Glendale Avenue, is the location of the Westgate Entertainment District, a vibrant shopping, dining and entertainment experience. And the entertainment options are growing with Dave and Busters currently under construction. Westgate is the location of Gila River Arena, home of the Arizona Coyotes. Located adjacent to the Westgate Entertainment District is Tanger Outlets at Westgate, home to many top-name brands. The Sports and Entertainment District is home to Cabela’s, a quality outdoor merchandise retailer, and American Furniture Warehouse, a 600,000 square foot home furniture retailer. Glendale is also the location of University of Phoenix Stadium where the Arizona Cardinals play and the Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. The University of Phoenix Stadium hosts the annual Fiesta Bowl, and most recently the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl XLIX.  In 2016, the stadium will host the College Football Playoff Championship game and in 2017, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four Championship series.

Aside from the national spotlight in the western area, Glendale also boasts a Historic Downtown that spans 10 blocks, with many specialty shops located throughout the area. Glendale’s signature festivals like Glendale Glitters, Glitter & Glow Block Party, the Glendale Chocolate Affaire, and the Summer Band Concert Series attract on average of 350,000 visitors to the area annually. This year, Glendale Glitters kicked off its festivities on November 28th, with 1.5 million lights illuminating Downtown Glendale and remained lit nightly through January 10th when the Glendale Glitter and Glow party wrapped up the festivities.

The Container StoreFinally, north Glendale provides an attractive location for retailers with itsproximity to the Loop 101 regional transportation corridor. Arrowhead Towne Center located in near 75th Ave and Bell Road, is the West Valley’s only mall and includes over 1.2 million square feet of retail shopping and eateries.  In addition to the major anchors including Dillard’s, Macy’s, Sears, JC Penny and Dick’s Sporting Goods, just in time for their 20 year anniversary, Arrowhead recently announced the addition of a 25,000 square foot H&M location as well as significant planned renovation improvements to be completed in 2015.  Just outside of the mall, Glendale recently welcomed the newest location of the Container Store, which is the store’s first location in the West Valley and only the second in the state.
