Empereon-Constar Announces 800 Jobs Coming to Glendale
Empereon-Constar, a Phoenix-based provider of comprehensive contact center solutions, announced in November 2013 that they are opening a second operations center in Glendale. The company worked with the Arizona Commerce Authority and the City of Glendale in identifying its new location, a new 40,000-square-foot facility at Bell Road and 51st Avenue in Glendale. The new center will hire upwards of 800 employees. The company’s headquarters is just down the street in Phoenix near 35th Ave. and Bell Road. Empereon-Constar also has call centers in Pennsylvania and Colorado. The company provides call center, marketing and customer service operations to media organizations, telecommunications, cable television, financial services and other industries.

Draws 700 attendees

The City of Glendale held its first job fair in December 2013, drawing in 700 applicants for more than 1,500 posted jobs. The City hosted the event at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatic Center in partnership with Maricopa Workforce Connections and Glendale Community College (GCC). GCC hosted a pre-event presentation for job-seekers on the topic of using LinkedIn to network for career success. The event featured 10 Glendale employers, including Dignity Health, ZyTech Building Systems, Terminix, Empereon-Constar, CSAA/AAA Insurance, and the Glendale Police Department and received tremendous media attention.

 

 

New Business:

Glendale, AZ - Recovery - Grant awarded. NPL Construction Facility Breaking New Ground in Glendale
NPL Construction Co., the nation’s leader in underground utility and energy distribution construction, is celebrating the groundbreaking of a 52,000-square-foot construction operations complex in Glendale, Arizona. The state-of-the-art facility will be a model of sustainability, set on 12 acres and home to the operations team of approximately 300 employees serving the state of Arizona. Completion is scheduled for October of 2014, and it will be their first ground-up building in Arizona. Their new Glendale-based facility will be located at 7632 N. Glen Harbor Blvd, within the Glen Harbor Business Park. 
Glendale, AZ - Recovery - Grant awarded. Avanti Windows Opening in Glendale
Window manufacturer Avanti Industries, LLC has signed a lease for 40,106 square feet in Glendale at a multi-tenant manufacturing/warehouse building at 5107 N. 51st Avenue. The company plans to manufacture windows in the Glendale location. The company should have 100 employees by year-end 2014 and hopes to grow the company to 200 employees by 2016.  President of Avanti Industries Jerry Petty says that there were many factors that went into making the decision to come to Glendale, but ultimately, it was the community welcome and the staff appreciation of the company’s quick timing needs, as they are planning to be operational as soon as February 2014.
Glendale, AZ - Recovery - Grant awarded. Glendale Welcomes The Pain Center of Arizona
The City of Glendale is pleased to welcome The Pain Center of Arizona (TPC), which is expanding to better serve their medical customer base. The operation will grow from 100 to 150 employees in Glendale within the next 12-18 months. TPC has signed a lease at the Glendale Corporate Center Building “G” at 5281 North 99th Avenue for 12,500 square feet of office space, and they expect to be operational at the new location mid-February.  The Pain Center’s new location will serve as their corporate headquarters for executive, administration, and human resources operations for their 12 statewide clinic locations.
Glendale, AZ - Recovery - Grant awarded. Westgate Announces Three New Office Leases
Lockheed Martin, Mattamy Homes and Harvard Drug Group are among the three newest office tenants at Glendale’s Westgate Entertainment District. The three new tenants will absorb 8,400 square feet of space at Westgate. Harvard Drug Group’s location will be a sales office for its generic pharmaceutical distribution operation and will hire 25 employees. Canadian-owned Mattamy Homes will use its Westgate location as a marketing center for its Phoenix-area subdivisions and new community developments in Peoria, Surprise, Glendale and Mesa. Defense company Lockheed Martin’s office at Westgate will serve as part of its consolidation process given the announcement of its Goodyear manufacturing operation closure in 2015.
Glendale, AZ - Recovery - Grant awarded. ZyTech Board Cutting Ceremony Showcases New Operation
ZyTech Building Systems hosted an invitation Open House and “Board Cutting” Ceremony on November 15 at their new Glendale facility at 67th Avenue and Northern Avenue. Howler, the mascot from the Coyotes, made a special appearance at the event to help cut the lumber board (in lieu of a ribbon). Glendale is the first US location for the Canadian-based company, which will grow to 300 jobs as it establishes itself as a resource to the residential and commercial building industry in the southwestern US.
Glendale, AZ - Recovery - Grant awarded. Barron Lighting Group Opens in Glendale
Celebrating 40 years of success, Barron Lighting Group recently purchased a new 80,000 sq. ft. production facility in Glendale at Glen Harbor Airpark, expecting to ramp up to 80 employees within the first year of operation, doubling its current workforce.   The Barron Team occupied the building officially on December 30, 2013. Barron manufactures commercial and industrial lighting. Barron has 11 warehouses across the U.S., including sites in Edison, N.J.; Tampa, Fla.; Dallas; Chicago; and St. Louis. The company also has manufacturing supply chain links in China. Barron makes a variety of lighting fixtures and commercial bulbs. Its products are being used on the Washington Monument to aid repairs after a rare earthquake hit the District of Columbia in 2011.

The City of Glendale is once again a proud partner of the Arizona SciTech Festival, a statewide series of fun, family-friendly expos, workshops, tours & demonstrations of science, technology, engineering and math.  Glendale is also a collaborative partner with WESTMARC on a new and exciting Arizona Geocache initiative, which is Arizona’s first official “Geocache” tour – taking place throughout the West Valley. Banner Radiation Oncology Program Expands to Glendale
Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert has expanded its radiation oncology program, bringing new treatment expertise to patients at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale. The program integrates the clinical services of radiation oncology programs at these hospitals with Banner MD Anderson, including The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s world-renowned approach to cancer care and access to subspecialty experts in both Gilbert and Houston. The Glendale location has been providing radiation oncology care for many years, including electron beam treatment, image-guided radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and 3D conformal treatment, which allows radiation therapy beams to be shaped exactly to the size of a tumor. This expansion will enhance and build upon these existing programs, and new physicians will join both campuses, bringing radiation treatment expertise backed by residency training at MD Anderson. Physicians and staff at the hospital will also have a direct link to radiation oncologists and subspecialty physicians at Banner MD Anderson. Approximately half of all cancer patients require radiation therapy as part of their treatment.

Glendale Stadium Photo Glendale to Host Championship Game in 2016
In December it was announced that Glendale, Arizona will host the College Football Playoff championship in 2016. The title game is scheduled to be played Jan. 11, 2016 in Glendale at the University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the Fiesta Bowl and the NFL's Cardinals. The Fiesta Bowl is also part of the six-bowl semifinal rotation for the playoff, but it won't host a semifinal until the 2016 season. The other bidders for the 2016 game were Jacksonville, Fla., New Orleans and Tampa.

Fulton Homes Announces new Glendale Homes near University of Phoenix Stadium
In November, Tempe-based Fulton Homes announced they were closing escrow on a large swath of land next to University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale for roughly $38.94 million. The parcel — 354 acres on the southeast corner of Bethany Home Road and 91st Avenue — is where the homebuilder has blueprints for more than 1,500 homes, marking Fulton’s return to the West Valley after completing its last community five years ago.  The land is being sold by the family of late developer John F. Long, which has held the land for approximately three decades. Fulton plans to soon begin zoning and preliminary work with the City of Glendale. By late 2015, model homes should be complete and the community will be dubbed Stonehaven.

The real estate market in the City of Glendale continues to demonstrate a healthy rate of absorption, pointing to positives signs of life in the local market.

Building occupancy rates are one statistic used to track the health of the business community within Glendale. Occupancy and vacancy rates are tracked in three categories: retail, office and industrial.

Retail and industrial continue to be very strong real estate sectors for the City of Glendale, and even though office rates continue to struggle, they are showing signs of improvement. 106,435 square feet of existing office space was absorbed in the last 12 months in Glendale. While most of the office leases that dominated the 3rd quarter of 2013 in Glendale were small, mostly medical offices in the 1,000-2,000 square foot range, the market “win” of a 40,000 lease to Empereon-Constar certainly helped improve the vacancy rate. Glendale has only three 100,000 square foot-plus office buildings that currently account for 39% of the City’s vacancy rate, making the 2014 Glendale office market something very interesting to watch. If Glendale’s three largest buildings got absorbed, the vacancy rate would only be 15%.
