Glendale, AZ - Code Compliance - Signing Off with the Help of Volunteers

Signs, signs. Everywhere there are signs! But thanks to city code compliance volunteers, there is extra help to remove illegal signs in Glendale. Whether it is a ‘yard sale’ sign or a ‘for hire’ sign, these type of signs found in the right-of-way are not allowed. Last year, volunteers removed more than 15,790 signs, which are known to create visual blight.

Volunteers play a critical role in the Code Compliance Department as they help reduce the department’s staff time on certain violations, which frees up resources to combat more complex issues. In addition, the volunteers are inspecting vacant parcels for violations that primarily pertain to overgrown weeds, which if left unchecked become blight and a potential fire hazard. Additionally, they look for excessive trash/debris that may have been dumped on a property. As they find parcels that are in violation, the parcels are listed and referred to an inspector to follow-up.

Why Volunteer?

Code Compliance volunteers are eligible for the usual benefits available to other city of Glendale volunteers, which include discounts available for travel and vacation packages, discount movie tickets for Harkins and AMC theaters, membership in Arizona Federal Credit Union, eligibility to join Costco and Sam’s Club, wellness programs and benefits provided by Maricopa Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.  Citizens are asked to commit at least four hours a week, have a flexible schedule and be able to drive a half-ton pick-up truck. All training and support is provided by Code staff.

Make a Difference

Code volunteers provide invaluable assistance to the department, and the extra set of eyes helps beautify the city while fulfilling the goals of code compliance, which is to ensure compliance with city codes and ordinances. These community standards have been established to promote health and safety, protect the community from blight and deterioration and enhance the livability of Glendale.
