Glendale, AZ - News Cactus District Meeting March 21

Councilmember Phil Lieberman is hosting a community meeting for residents living in the Cactus District at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21 at Horizon School, 8520 N. 47th Avenue. The meeting will be held in the cafeteria.

Lieberman will be joined by Interim Police Chief Debora Black, along with representatives from Glendale’s Marketing & Communications, Transportation and Parks, Recreation & Library Departments.

In addition to providing updates on Cactus District and citywide matters, the Glendale representatives will be available to answer questions from residents.

Councilmember Lieberman and his guest, Recreation Coordinator Michelle Yates, discuss the static jet display at Bonsall Park. This F-100D Super Sabre nicknamed “The Hun” was refurbished in 2011 through the dedication of volunteers and staff, and through the generous donations of many. Glendale’s 18 boards and commissions assist the City Council in making important policy decisions that impact the community. These volunteer citizen advisory groups research, study and discuss specific Glendale projects and issues and then forward their recommendations to the City Council. Cactus District Neighborhood Improvement Grants Update – FY 08-09 Mission Park – Councilmember Phil Lieberman contributed Cactus District funds to complete improvements at Mission Park. This project involved several partners, starting with the commitment of Sands West neighborhood. The neighborhood applied for a neighborhood grant, and worked closely with the city’s Neighborhood Partnerships Office and Parks & Recreation Department.
West Plaza Estates – Cactus District funds were also used to pay for repairs to the damaged entry monument at West Plaza Estates. The monument was originally installed as part of a neighborhood grant.

Apollo Heights Neighborhood Grant
New entryway signage now greets residents of the Apollo Heights Neighborhood as the result of a beautification project at the southeast corner of 46th and Northern Avenues. A neighborhood grant was awarded to the Apollo Heights Neighborhood Association by the Citizen’s Advisory Commission on Neighborhoods.

VIP Program
Through Glendale’s Visual Improvement Program (VIP), the city partnered with Gary Weinberger, owner of the property on the northwest corner of 43rd and Glendale Avenues, to demolish the old Poliberto’s building and redeveloped the site. Improvements included a new restaurant, landscaping, parking lot improvements and brick wall.
