Councilmember Samuel “Sammy” Chavira was elected in November 2012 to represent Glendale’s Yucca District and began his term on January 15, 2013. Councilmember Chavira serves on Glendale’s Government Services Committee, the Maricopa Association of Governments Regional Domestic Violence Council and the National League of Cities Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee.
Councilmember Chavira’s commitment to making the community around him a better place began long before he announced his bid for a seat on the Glendale City Council. He’s served as a Phoenix firefighter for 14 years, was a founding member of the Cesar Chavez Foundation, and was instrumental in transforming an abandoned elementary school in the Phoenix Union School District into the Franklin Police and Fire High School, a unique program that gives students a head start on their own careers as first responders.
He’s received numerous accolades for his service, including a Merit Award from the Phoenix Fire Department in April for performing life-saving CPR, while he was off-duty, to a man who had suffered a heart attack.
Chavira is a proud, lifelong resident of the West Valley, and has lived in Glendale’s Yucca district for the past two decades with his wife, Judy and two daughters. Sammy and Judy have been married for 20 years. Their children attend Desert Mirage Elementary School, where Judy serves as the vice president of the PTA.
