59th Avenue Roadway Improvements
from Deer Valley to Pinnacle Peak Roads

Background: In July, the City Council approved a contract ($694,292) with Stantec Consulting to design the new roadway for 59th Avenue from Deer Valley to Pinnacle Peak roads. The contract also includes developing all the cost estimates for the job (paving, curb cuts, drainage, multi-use path bridge, landscaping, etc.), bidding the contracts and managing the project during construction.

Facts:

• The two-lane design of the new roadway, which is based on a proposal submitted by a citizens group, will use more than 90 percent of the existing roadway alignment in order to minimize additional impacts to the desert conservation park.
  
  
• The city’s plan is to phase the construction work in order to maintain traffic in each direction throughout the duration of the roadway construction project.
  
  
• The new roadway will feature a paved shoulder that will provide separation between the travel lane and the bike lane, as well as provide an area for emergency stops and to enable police officers to conduct traffic enforcement.
  
  
• A landscaped median will be constructed and feature native desert-type plants.
  
  
• Improvements at Thunderbird Park’s main entrance will also be constructed as part of this project. A left-turn lane and a right-turn lane will be added.
  
  
• A community open house will be held early next year with residents and other stakeholders before the roadway design is finalized.
  
  
• Once the final design is completed, the City Council will then have to award a construction contract to begin work on the street.
