Hiring Process

Dear Applicant:

Please read this announcement in its entirety to prepare you for testing.

The Glendale Police Department’s employment opportunities for Police Officers and Police Trainees, involves a multi-phased selection process. Various steps are employed to select the very best candidates possible. Once an applicant enters the testing process, they are placed on an eligibility list, which remains viable for a period of one year, from the date of the applicants initial testing. The following steps are used to identify the most qualified applicants:

  1. Physical Agility Test
  2. Written Test
  3. Polygraph
  4. Background Interview
  5. Background Investigation
  6. Intial Staff Review for Conditional Offer
  7. Psychological Evaluation
  8. Medical Examination
  9. Final Staff Review for Final Offer of Employment

The following information is provided to you, to inform you of your welcomed participation in our employment process.

Your are hereby invited to attend and participate in the Glendale Police Department’s upcoming Police Officer / Trainee Physical Agility All applicants will need to present the necessary forms and their photo identification, to qualify for this test. No admission to the test site will be permitted once the posted testing start time has passed, so do not be late. If you have previously submitted all of your necessary forms to our Human Resource Department, you are not required to bring any additional forms to the test site. Please read the Physical Agility Testing Information section in this announcement, to determine if you still need to bring additional forms to the test site.  

The Physical Agility test consists of three events. Applicants must complete a 1.5-mile run in 14:59 or less, complete 19 push-ups and 28 sit-ups in one minute. This is a pass/fail test. It is recommended that you be well hydrated for this test. You may wish to provide you own liquids. If not, there is a water fountain at the test site. Prior to performing the test, police department fitness instructors will lead the group in stretching exercises. You will be notified of your test results, at the test site, once you have completed each event.

Successful applicants will advance on to the written test, the same day, at the test site listed in this announcement. The written test consists of 168 questions and requires an applicant to achieve a 70% (117 correct) score to pass. This is also a pass/fail test. You will be allowed 3 hours and 15minutes to complete this test. Applicants will again need to present their photo identification to enter the written test site and no admission will be permitted once the test has started. Please read the Written Testing Information section this announcement, to determine if you still need to bring additional forms to the test site. You will be notified of your test result, at the test site, once you have completed the written test.

Study Guide

The City of Glendale Human Resource Department provides a study guide to applicants for the written test. Study guides will be available on line at http://www.glendaleaz.com/Police/documents/PoliceStudyGuidewithPics.pdf

All applicants who successfully pass the written test will be fingerprinted immediately following the written test. Applicant deemed to be the most qualified, will be contacted by a police department background investigator and scheduled for a section interview in a timely manner.

Those who are unsuccessful on the agility or written tests may re-apply at anytime, following the same protocol as outlined on our website at www.GlendalePoliceJobs.com

The following forms are required to be completed and turn in to the Glendale Human Resource Department, who will be on site on the day of the test.

  • City of Glendale Application
  • Release and Authorization (must be notarized prior to testing)
  • Waiver of Liability         
  • Credit Report Authorization and Disclosure Release form
  • Prior Polygraph Information form
  • Background Questionnaire

Polygraph Examination:

All applicants who successfully complete the written test and have all the proper paperwork completed will be scheduled for a polygraph examination. Honesty and integrity are the hallmarks of law enforcement service. Applicants will undergo an examination to verify the truthfulness of their application, questionnaire, verbal and written statements. The following suggestion should assist applicants in this phase of the process.

  • A good night sleep prior to your exam is essential
  • Eat a good meal before the testing
  • Dress comfortably (causal business attire, such as slacks and short sleeve shirt are preferred, no jackets, sweater, long sleeve shirts, ties, high heels)
  • Applicants need to  be physically well
  • Applicants who have recently had surgery cannot undergo polygraph testing
  • Applicants who are pregnant cannot undergo testing

Background Interview Information:

The most qualified applicants will be contacted by a police department background investigator and scheduled for a background interview. The following original forms, and a copy of each, unless otherwise noted, are required to be presented to the background investigator at the time of the interview:

  • U.S. birth certificate (must have sate issued birth number), or Naturalization papers. Original and copy required.
  • G.E.D. certificate, high school diploma, four-year college diploma or original school transcripts. Original(s) and copy(s) required. Do not open envelopes containing original transcripts. They must remain sealed or they are no longer originals.
  • Social Security card. Original and copy required
  • DD214 Member-4 copy (military discharge papers), if applicable. Original issue and copy required.
  • Current drivers license. Original and copy required
  • Current motor vehicle registration on all vehicles owned by you, and / your spouse. Original(s) and copy(s) required.
  • Current proof of auto insurance on all vehicles owned by you, and / your spouse. Original(s) and copy(s) required.
  • A copy of your last performance evaluation. Copy required
  • Bankruptcy papers. Original(s) and copy(s) required.

Conditional Offer:

A Conditional Offer will be extended to the most qualified applicants. The Conditional Offer advises that the applicant must be successful through any remaining elements of the Background Investigation, the Psychological Evaluation and the Medical Examination before a Final Offer of Employment can be offered.

Psychological Evaluation:

Applicants must be psychologically capable of performing the duties of a Peace Officer. The Psychological Evaluation, performed by a licensed psychologist, assesses the candidate for potential development of behavioral difficulties on the job and reports any concerns to the department for consideration.

Medical Examination:

Applicants must be physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of a Peace Officer. The Medical Examination, performed by a licensed physician, certifies that the applicant meets the prescribed standards for the job.

Final Offer:

Applicants who have met all of he prescribed standards of the Glendale Police Department and the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZ POST) will receive a Final Offer of Employment.

Applicants beginning the testing process will remain on the department’s eligibility list for up to one year, unless the applicant is deemed unable to successfully move forward through one of the various phases of the testing process. Applicant will be notified in a timely manner, when they are no longer being considered. Applicants will not be provided with feedback sessions or any specifics as to why they were not selected to continue in the employment process. The Glendale Police Officer/Trainee employment process is conducted under strict confidential conditions, which prohibits the release of such information to unauthorized external sources, including the applicant.

Applicants should remain cognizant of the fact that throughout the entire employment process, they are being evaluated. Applicant should be honest at all times and strive to make the very best impression possible as they proceed through each phase of the employment process.

Physical fitness is paramount to the applicant’s success. They should faithfully continue to improve their level of fitness, to better the rigors of the physical conditioning to come and to hopefully avoid injuries.
