Glendale Police Host 9th Annual Youth Fishing Tournament
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Ninth Annual Glendale Police Department Youth Fishing event will take place this Saturday,10/4, at Lake Pleasant. The tournament will launch from the Pleasant Harbor Marina South ramp at 6:30 AM and weigh-in will begin at 11:30 AM. The tournament has two age groups: 12-15 and 11-under. Children may participate in the tournament in one of two ways. If a parent, friend or family member has a boat, they may bring kids out and take them fishing on their boat. However, if a child does not have access to a boat, we have volunteer boaters willing to take the child out fishing for the morning. Lunch is provided and numerous prizes will be given away. All participants will receive some fishing tackle and other prizes.
According to Sergeant Rich Stringer, the founder of this event, the tournament was started to introduce the youth of our state to the great outdoors and the wonderful sport of fishing. It was also designed to encourage parents to participate in the activity with their children and hopefully give them a positive alternative to the potentially negative activities tempting our youth on a daily basis. The event began in 2000 with 31 kids participating the first year. Since its humble beginnings the event has grown to over 100 kids fishing the event each year and has drawn both local and national media attention.
