School Crossing Violation Fines Double
With the start of school just around the corner, the Glendale Police Department would like to remind drivers that violations in a 15 mph school crossing zone will result in a double fine.
The increased penalty went into effect September 2006. Although it is a state law, each city determines the fine. The fine for a violation in a 15 mph school crossing zone in Glendale is $240.40.
The 15 mph school crossing zone is in effect from the first sign that says, “No passing, 15 mph, fines double, school in session,” to the end of the crosswalk. Once drivers pass the end of the crosswalk, they can resume the posted speed. If the sign does not have “fines double” posted, a motorist cannot receive a double fine if pulled over.
There are three ways to violate a school crossing zone:
- Speeding – even 1 mph over can result in a violation and a double fine
- Failing to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk – although the signs say to stop when children are in the crosswalk, drivers must yield to any pedestrian
- Overtaking and passing a vehicle – there is no passing from the first sign to the end of the crosswalk.
All violations will result in the same fine. Most signs are out no sooner than 45 minutes before school starts and taken down no later than 30 minutes after the last dismissal.
