Historic Preservation Bus Tour
The Glendale Historic Preservation Commission together with city staff conducted the 2009 Annual Historic Preservation Bus Tour on May 16, 2009. Click here for photos and further details of the 2009 tour. The Annual Historic Preservation Bus Tour provides an opportunity for Glendale residents and members of the general public to experience some of Glendale’s rich historic heritage. The Annual Historic Preservation Bus Tour typically takes place in mid-May during National Historic Preservation Month. Notices of the tour are generally provided through press releases and this website by early April. About the Commission
The Glendale City Council adopted a Historic Preservation Plan and Ordinance in 1992 and formed a Historic Preservation Commission in 1993. The Commission’s purpose is to advise the Planning Commission and City Council on historic preservation issues, including designation of historic properties on the national, state, and Glendale registers for historic places, and develop awareness and support for historic preservation. The following historic resources have be placed on the national, state, and Glendale registers:
- 1978 Beet Sugar Factory - 5243 W. Glendale Ave.
- 1980 Sahuaro Ranch - 9802 N. 59th Drive
- 1983 First National Bank - 6838 N. 58th Drive
- 1989 Glendale Woman’s Club - 7032 N. 58th Ave.
- 1992 Glendale Town site - Catlin Court Historic District
- 1998 Manistee Ranch Historic District - 5127 W. Northern Ave.
The Historic Preservation Commission is currently administering:
- 2004 Certified Local Government Federal Pass-Through Grant that produced a Cultural Diversity Study, list of the top twenty historic resources for National Register nomination, and National Register nominations for the Floralcroft Subdivision as a historic district, Glendale High School Auditorium, and the First Methodist Church Sanctuary.
- FY 2004 - 2005 Supplemental request funds for preparation of several historic resources, National Register historic district, and individual site nominations.
- 2004 Heritage Fund Grant for the weatherization and stabilization of eleven historic homes in the Catlin Court Historic District, expansion of the Catlin Court Historic District boundaries, and community education.

2009 Ruth Byrne Historic Preservation Award
Mayor Scruggs together with Bud Zomok, Chair of the Glendale Historic Preservation Commission, presented the Ruth Byrne Historic Preservation Award to Nelda Crowell, Archivist for the Thunderbird School of Global Management, at the meeting of the Glendale City Council on May 26, 2009. Click here for photo and further details. The Ruth Byrne Historic Preservation Award is awarded annually to recognize outstanding contributions to historic preservation in the Glendale community. Nomination forms are generally available by mid-January and due in early March. Presentation of the award takes place in May, which is National Historic Preservation Month.
