swimming pools and two aquatics centers. Aquatics programs include Recreation Swim, American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim, Junior Lifeguard/Guardstart, Swim & Dive Teams, and special events. FREE Swim Fridays!

Calling all Glendale youth 17 and under – come have a cool time at Free Swim Fridays! The Arizona Physicians IPA makes Free Swim Fridays possible through their generous funding. It happens Fridays, June 8-August 3 at Cardinal Pool, 1-4 p.m.; O’Neil Pool, 1-5 p.m. and Rose Lane Aquatics Center, 1-8 p.m.

Recreation Swim

Pools will begin to open for regular recreation swim hours Saturday, June 2. Rose Lane Aquatics Center and Foothills Recreation & Aquatics Center will have weekend recreation swim hours beginning in May. For information, call the AQUATICS HOTLINE: 623-930-2041.

Children ages 6 and under must be accompanied by a responsible person (14 or older) and must be within an arms length of the child at all times. A wrist-band will be provided for patrons in this category. Children 7-9 must be accompanied by a responsible person (14 or older) who stays at the facility at all times. Children 10 or older may utilize a facility without additional supervision.

Multiple day Swim Passes for recreation swim will be available for purchase at each of the pools and aquatics centers. Prices vary depending on location. Swim Passes offer a discounted rate off of the daily admission rate for residents only except at Foothills Recreation & Aquatics Center. Passes are valid for one summer with NO refunds for unused portions.

Swim Lessons

The last session of swim lessons ends July 27. Lessons will be offered again next summer.

SUMMER ’08 Lifeguard Program!

Lifeguard and CPR for the Professional Rescuer Training Class
Successful completion of this course will provide the participant with a 3 year American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification and 1 year American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification.

  • Class days and times (subject to change):
    August 4 (pre-test), 8-10 a.m.
    August 6-10 (training), 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
    PARTICIPANT MUST ATTEND EVERY SCHEDULED CLASS TO PASS. NO REFUNDS OR MAKE UPS WILL BE GIVEN FOR MISSED CLASSES. All books are included. Pocket masks are included in the class materials.

  • Minimum Age: 15 years old by the last day of the class.

  • Prerequisite/Pre-test: Participants must have Red Cross Level 4 swimming proficiency or equivalent. Pre-test will consist of swimming 300 yards continuously, (100 yards freestyle, 100 yards breaststroke and 100 yards freestyle or breaststroke). Additionally, participant must swim 25 yards from wall, complete a feet-first surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound object from 7 ft. of water and swim on his/her back with the brick to the side of the pool within
    1 minute 45 seconds.

  • Location (subject to change): Glendale Community College Pool (63rd & Olive avenues, southwest side of college).

  • Registration: To register, call 623-930-2820. Registration ends when class fills or 5 p.m. on the day before the first class. Use registration code: 462707-10

  • Cost: Residents $125; Non-residents $150.

  • Lifeguard Training is required for the following City of Glendale aquatic positions... Pool Manager, Assistant Manager, Water Safety Instructor, and Lifeguard. Lifeguard Training is not required, but is strongly preferred, for Pool Cashier positions. CPR-PR training is required for all aquatic positions. Passing certification classes does not in any way guarantee employment with the City of Glendale. Obtaining certification does allow the participant to be eligible to apply for an aquatics position with the City.
