Parks & Recreation - Youth Sports

VOLUNTEER COACHES NEEDED!
Help us serve the children in our community!
Please indicate your desire to coach on the registration form when registering your child. (This does not guarantee a coaching position). Those who do not have children in the league are also welcome to apply to become a volunteer coach in our award-winning youth sports program.
Qualifications:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Complete a coach’s application and submit it to the Park & Recreation office, 5850 W. Glendale Ave., by Friday, August 29th, 2008.
  3. Be fingerprinted and have an FBI background check done.
  4. Attend a mandatory coaches meeting on Sept 17th.
  5. Attend the National Youth Sports Coaches Association Certification program (2 classes).
    Adhere to the City of Glendale’s Coach’s Code of Conduct and department philosophy “The outcome of the child is more important than the outcome of the game.”

Youth ages 8-15 – Join us for the
PUNT, PASS & KICK COMPETITION!
This national skills competition allows participants to demonstrate punting, passing and placekicking skills in both boys and girls divisions. Scores are based on distance and accuracy and the competition is free to youth ages 8 to 15. Winners from each of the four following local competitions will advance to the sectional competition held November 2, 2008. The top four boys and girls in the sectional competition throughout the state will advance to the Team Championships at the University of Phoenix Stadium during the Arizona Cardinal vs. Minnesota Viking game, Sunday, December 7.

Participants can register at a local event below or get a pre-registration form by calling 623-930-2043 or 623-930-2841. Participants may compete in only ONE local event. Results will be made available online within 48 hours of each competition and winners will be notified by phone. For information call 623-930-2841.

  • Local Event 1 – Wednesday, September 10, 5:30–8 p.m.
    Christ’s Church of the Valley, 67th Ave. and Pinnacle Peak Rd.
  • Local Event 2 – Thursday, September 25, 5:30–8 p.m.
    Paseo Racquet Center Complex (Field 2), 63rd Ave. and Thunderbird Rd.
  • Local Event 3 – Tuesday, September 30, 5:30–8 p.m.
    Foothills Park #1, 57th Ave., North of Union Hills Dr.
  • Local Event 4 – Thursday, October 9, 5:30–8 p.m.
    Glendale Youth Sports Complex, 91st Ave. and Bethany Home Rd.

Shoes must be worn; football shoes, cleats and turf shoes are prohibited. Only soft-soled sneakers will be allowed. Each participant will have one punt, one pass and one kick. Scores are determined on distance and accuracy for the three events, with winners determined by the highest cumulative score. All participants must show proof of age at all levels of competition. Failure to provide proof of age (birth certificate or religious document such as baptismal record) will result in that participant being ineligible to compete.
