5 Ways to Stay Cool in the City
There's no avoiding it. Summer in the city is well on its way! But that doesn't mean you need to suffer the heat. Glendale's parks, libraries and other community services and amenities offer plenty of ways to keep your cool. Try these ideas on for size.
1. Pool is the rule! That's right--Glendale's pools are open for business starting May 10! All Glendale pools will be opening for aquatic programs and open swimming throughout the month, with the Foothills Recreation & Aquatics Center kicking off with a big splash May 10 as it opens for weekend recreation swimming. The center features two slides, a lazy river, a lap pool, diving well, playground, leisure pool, shaded deck and concessions area. Cooling off has never been easier! Click here to check out the swim book for more information.
2. Nighty night, check out those lights! Join Glendale's Parks and Recreation Department for a little star searching on Saturday, May 10. Explore the universe from 7 to 10 p.m. at Thunderbird Park, 59th Avenue north of Deer Valley Road. The Saguaro Astronomy Club will have some amazing telescopes available for free public viewing and will be answering questions. Bring a lawn chair, blanket, flashlight and walking shoes. Please park in designated areas only. For more information, call Danielle at 623-930-4701. Visit the Saguaro Astronomy Club at www.saguaroastro.org. Free admission!
3. Get the story... storytime, that is. Curl up with the kids, bring the family out or plan a night out on your own with a Glendale Library storytime session, author encounter, book club or one of the hundreds of other programs happening regularly. Multiple programs are scheduled every day at each library branch. Plan your fun today. Click here to check out the library event calendar.
4. Get smart about your city. Learn the ins and outs of your city government or learn how to improve and work with your HOA through Glendale's civic education offerings. Residents can now register for Glendale University 101 and the Homeowners Association Academy from the comfort of their own homes by using the city’s new Community Education Internet Application System. Users will be able to create their own online profiles and select the classes they interested in attending from the buttons at the bottom of the page. The new system will also keep track of all the classes you have attended via a password you create. Once you have selected your classes, a report is sent to the Neighborhood Services Coordinator registering you for the class. (Mailed in and faxed applications will still be accepted, as well.) Click here to get started now!
5. Be a tourist in your own hometown. Check out the many evening activities and fun (and cool!) places to visit in your own hometown. The Glendale Visitor Center has a full slate of ideas, activities and places for you to visit, from May's fun Girl's Night Out downtown shopping event to the lowdown on great local restaurants and shops. Stop by the center and pick up a few tips to make a vacation out of being at home. Click here to visit the Glendale tourism Web site now. |
