Glendale commission recommends neighborhood grants to be used for infrastructure improvements
The Glendale City Council approved grant requests worth $168,316 at their Dec. 11 meeting, which will benefit residents in four neighborhoods.
The grants begin with residents identifying a need in their neighborhood and making an application to the Citizens’ Advisory Commission on Neighborhoods. As part of its commitment to revitalizing and preserving older neighborhoods, the City Council established the Citizens’ Advisory Commission on Neighborhoods to make funding recommendations on neighborhood improvement grant requests. Residents living in neighborhoods that are 15 years or older may apply for the grants. The Commission voted unanimously to fund each of the four Fall 2007 grant requests. A brief description of each proposal follows below.
1. East Catlin Court: $50,000 to conduct conceptual and final design work for streetscape improvements along Gardenia Avenue, from 55th to 57th avenues. Streetscape elements, at a minimum, will include landscaping, decorative lighting and sidewalk improvements. The neighborhood will engage in conceptual design, with the end result being consensus from participating residents on what features should be included in the final design work. The conceptual design will also provide the best possible estimate for actual design work.
2. Mercer Lane Neighborhood Association: $52,117 to install new sidewalk panels; ADA accessible ramps; and corner aprons. As a contributing partner, Field Operations will provide labor for the installation of the ADA ramps and corner aprons. This partnership resulted in a $16,000 reduction in the original grant request - $66,116.95.
3. Tierra Buena Park Neighborhood Association: $48,114 to remove and replace the existing sand in the playground with rubberized surfacing. These improvements will compliment the recently completed improvements (painting of the playground equipment, refurbishing of the picnic Ramada and replacement of picnic tables) that were the result of a Fall 2006 neighborhood improvement grant.
4. West Plaza 3 & 4 Homeowner Association: $18,085 to remove, repair and slurry seal portions of the neighborhood's parking lot. The neighborhood is providing a $10,000 cash match and will be responsible for any cost overruns associated with the project. Should their not be any change orders, the neighborhood will adjust its cash match contribution upward to at least 50% of the total cost of the project.
