Cactus District - Meet Your Councilmember - Phil Lieberman

Phil LiebermanCouncilmember Phil Lieberman was elected to represent the Cactus District in March of 1992 and was re-elected in 1996, 2000, and 2004.  In the past he has served as Chairman of the Alternative Transportation, Budget and Utilities Council Committees. Councilmember Lieberman received his education from Colorado College, The University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Glendale Community College and Phoenix Community College.  He also has attended more than 24 specialized classes put on by the National League of Cities, where he is now a member of the Leadership Training Council, Board member of the University Caucus Committee and a member of the Human Development Policy and Advocacy Committee.

Prior to being elected he was very involved in civic affairs in Glendale. He has always believed in and worked for Glendale’s future.

Councilmember Lieberman’s community activities include:

  • Past President and long time member of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce.
  • District Commissioner, both Boy Scout and Cub Scout for the White Tanks District.
  • Founder and past President (2-term) of the Catlin Court Historic District Association.
  • Founder and Past President of Glendale Downtown Development Corporation
  • Hearing officer, Justice of the Peace courts 1992/2004.
  • Member of the Thunderbird Balloon Classic Board of Directors (14 Years)
  • Member, Review Board, Glendale Fire Department for its first Battalion Chief
  • Board member, 7 years, Faith House
  • Board member and Treasurer, Little Candles home for abused young ladies
  • Board Member, Fund-Raising, West Valley Child Crisis Center.
  • Member, Glendale Downtown Rotary
  • Member, Past President, Glendale Optimist Club
  • Member and Past President, 2 term City of Glendale Board of Adjustment    (8 Years).
  • Army Veteran.  Presently President, Arizona Chapter 10th Mountain Division Association
  • Counselor, Arizona Department of Education, Special Education Unit
  • Present member Maricopa Association of Governments Regional Domestic Violence Committee.

Councilmember Lieberman founded and operated three successful retail businesses in Glendale for over 20 years. In 1985 Councilmember Lieberman was awarded “Dealer of the Year” by United States Suzuki, an organization with more than 1300 members. Councilmember Lieberman’s business ownership necessitated that he be highly skilled in finance, legal contracts, budgets, and personnel management. All of which has been very helpful in his position on the Glendale City Council.  He now is semi-retired although he still owns Lieberman Enterprises with his wife and does some sales and management consulting.

Councilmember Lieberman was born in Chicago, but has been an Arizona resident for 57 years and a member of the Glendale Community for 45 years. He and his wife Nita have adult children who attended Glendale Schools from kindergarten through junior college.
