Library Wireless Access- FAQs

The Glendale Public Library currently offers high speed wireless connectivity at the Main Library, Foothills, and Velma Teague Branch Libraries. All visitors may use the library ’s network free of charge and no special encryption settings are required; however, you must abide by the library’s Internet Use Policy to connect.

What can I access on the wireless network? Users of the Glendale Public Libraries' wireless network are limited to internet access (http/https), which requires an internet browser to be installed on your device. To ensure security for both wireless users and for the library's network, the following popular technologies and protocols are NOT supported:

FTP/TFTP (for file transfers)
POP3/IMAP email clients (Outlook, for example)
VPN (for remote network access)
Telnet/SSH (remote client access/file transfer)

Will I be able to access research products that are only available inside the library? Yes, your wireless access includes the availability of all research databases to which the library subscribes.

Will my internet access be filtered? Yes. The library utilizes a content filter for both its wired and wireless networks.

Can I print from my laptop? No. The library currently does not offer a printing solution for wireless users.

How secure is data I send over the wireless network? The library cannot guarantee the safety of your traffic across its wireless network. Exhibit caution when using any open wireless network. Wireless signals can be picked up by anyone using a wireless device and the proper software. Use care when sending personal information (names, addresses, passwords, credit card info, etc ) over an open wireless channel.

Does the Glendale Public Library offer Technical Assistance? The library is not able to provide technical assistance to users and cannot guarantee that you will be able to make a wireless connection. The Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from connection to the Library's network.

Will my Macintosh work with the wireless network? Yes, as long as it supports 802.11a or 802.11b/g wireless.
