Northern Avenue Storm Drain Construction Information UPDATE
Since your business, residence, or organization is located near this project, we’d like to provide some tentative construction information. We will do our best to provide the most current information; however, please remember that construction schedules sometimes need to be adjusted due to weather, utility coordination, or various other factors. Should you have questions, comments or concerns regarding this project, please don’t hesitate to contact our project hotline at 1.877.203.0042. We thank you for your patience during this project!
East of 51st Avenue: Crews are currently working to install main storm drain pipe on the south side of Northern Avenue, from just east of 49th Avenue heading east toward 47th Avenue. The project team has worked with Apollo High School to coordinate and communicate student and parent traffic routing as the storm drain pipe installation proceeds into the Northern Ave/47th Ave intersection. We apologize for this inconvenience and would like to provide the following tentative schedule for this work:
- Saturday, November 14th, crews will remove the asphalt in the Northern Ave/47th Ave intersection and work through the intersection over the weekend. This will NOT require a FULL CLOSURE, but will eliminate access to Northern Avenue for 47th Avenue on the south side of Northern Avenue.
- Saturday (Nov 14) thru Tuesday (Nov 24) – Crews will work through the intersection installing storm drain pipe, and when complete, prepare the road for paving.
- Wednesday, November 25th, crews will pave from east of 49th Ave through the 47th Ave intersection.
- Thursday, November 26th (Thanksgiving) – Traffic control should be removed for everything east of 51st Avenue.
59th Avenue Bore (Tunnel) Operation: Crews have been working to excavate the large pit on Northern Avenue, on the west side of 59th Avenue. This excavation is complete and the equipment was placed last Friday begin the digging of the “tunnel” (also known as a “bore”) under 59th Avenue today. Traffic control is in place for this construction activity, shifted to the north side of Northern Avenue with one lane eastbound and one lane westbound (left turns restricted). To cross 59th Avenue, rather than trench through the intersection, the method of installation will be by digging a “tunnel” and inserting the storm drain pipe underneath 59th Avenue. Once this pipe is midway through the tunnel, the contractor will begin excavating a second pit on the east side of 59th Avenue to “receive” the pipe. As currently scheduled, it is anticipated that excavation for the second pit, on the east side of 59th Avenue, will begin the week of November 30th. The entire “tunneling” operation should take approximately 3 months to complete, to install storm drain pipe under 59th Avenue.
63rd Avenue: Storm drain crews will be working in Northern Avenue installing the 36” storm drain lateral pipe and the 20” raw water line pipe. This work is tentatively scheduled to be backfilled and paved back during on Wednesday, November 25th. In addition, crews for the Oasis Water Treatment Plant raw water line are working on 63rd Avenue, north of Northern Avenue to Royal Palm Drive to install water line in that area. During this installation, 63rd Avenue, north of Northern Avenue to Royal Palm Drive, will be closed for travel. This water line will convey water from various well sites near 63rd Avenue to the Oasis Groundwater Treatment Plant for treatment and distribution to Glendale residents and businesses. This work is tentatively scheduled to be completed by Friday, November 20th.
What is “potholing”? Prior to the main storm drain pipe installation, potholing is being conducted in various pre-determined locations along the project site. Potholing consists of digging small holes in the ground to provide information to the project team in the way of location and depth of underground utilities in an attempt to minimize utility conflicts during the installation of the 72” storm drain pipe.
- For your safety and the safety of the workers, please drive with caution through the construction activity.
