47th Avenue Lateral: Tentatively scheduled to take place next week, from Wednesday, March 16th, through Saturday, March 20th, to coincide with Apollo High School’s Spring Break, crews will work to install a lateral line in 47th Avenue. This lateral line will be installed from the main storm drain pipe in Northern Avenue heading north on 47th Avenue to just north of Apollo High School’s southern entrance on 47th Ave. To accommodate this activity, 47th Avenue will be CLOSED on the north side of Northern Avenue. Vehicles traveling on Northern Avenue will not be permitted to turn northbound onto 47th Avenue. The 47th Avenue north entrance and Northern Avenue entrance to 47th Place Condos should remain open.
- 47th Avenue to 49th Avenue: Originally scheduled for last Thursday and Friday, crews are tentatively scheduled to work on two storm drain laterals on the SOUTH side of Northern Avenue, one west of 47th Avenue and one west of 49th Avenue, during the week of March 22nd. To accommodate this activity, traffic will be shifted to the north side of Northern Avenue in this area, during that week.
- 59th Avenue to 58th Avenue: Crews have begun excavation and installation of main storm drain pipe in the south side of Northern Avenue, east of 59th Avenue, beginning with the connection from the 59th Avenue section of pipe which was “tunneled” under 59th Avenue earlier in the project. This work will proceed in an easterly direction toward 58th Avenue, and between 58th Avenue and 57th Drive, the pipe will cross over to the north side of Northern Avenue in its alignment. The crossing from south to north (between 58th Avenue and 57th Drive) is tentatively scheduled to take place in early April. More information will be provided as that activity gets closer.
- 61st Avenue to 59th Avenue: Crews have completed main storm drain pipe installation in the south side of Northern Avenue, just east of 61st Avenue to approximately 59th Avenue, and are currently working from 59th Lane to 59th Avenue to install the waterline and valves in that area. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction, with left turns restricted, and 59th Lane is closed on the south side of Northern Avenue. Due to the recent days of rain, the paving date, originally scheduled for Friday, March 12th, has been rescheduled for the end of next week, at which time the area from 61st Avenue to 59th Avenue should be paved. As crews work past driveways on the south side of Northern Avenue, it is necessary to restrict Northern Avenue access; however, we are coordinating with individual business owners to minimize or find alternate access for patrons.
- What are “laterals”? The main storm drain pipe is the large diameter pipe being installed that runs east-west in Northern Avenue to bring storm water to its ultimate destination (or “outfall”) in the retention area in the park on the southwest corner of 63rd Avenue and Northern Avenue. “Laterals” are the pipes that run north-south from catch basins, or holes in the curb and gutter, to the main storm drain pipe. This way storm water can flow down Northern Avenue along the curb/gutter until it reaches a catch basin…..it flows into the catch basin, then into the main storm drain pipe to flow to the retention basin.
- What is “potholing”? Prior to the main storm drain pipe installation, potholing is being conducted in various pre-determined locations along the project site. Potholing consists of digging small holes in the ground to provide information to the project team in the way of location and depth of underground utilities in an attempt to minimize utility conflicts during the installation of the 72” storm drain pipe.
- For your safety and the safety of the workers, please drive with caution through the construction activity. Please feel free to contact our hotline at 1.877.203.0042 with any questions, comments or concerns regarding the project, and once again, thank you for your patience as we work on this very important project for the City of Glendale’s storm water system.
