Northern Parkway Information & Updates
The Northern Parkway is a planned regional transportation facility that will extend approximately 12.5 miles from the Loop 303 expressway to the intersection with Grand Avenue (US 60). The project was first conceived by the Glendale Citizens Advisory Committee for Transportation Issues in 2001. Since then, it has been included in ballot initiatives for funding and approved by Glendale voters in 2001, county voters in 2004 (Proposition 400), and Peoria voters in 2005. The project is included in the Regional Transportation Plan prepared by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), the Maricopa County Major Streets and Routes Plan, the Glendale Transportation Plan and the Glendale General Plan Amendment (December 21, 2005).

The parkway will be an enhanced arterial street with overpass intersections at major cross streets to eliminate major traffic signals on Northern Avenue. Upon completion, it will provide a much-needed higher speed, higher-capacity east-west route in the central portion of the West Valley where no freeways are planned. The project is intended to improve travel time for West Valley commuters, reduce crash rates and serve a rapidly growing West Valley population.

  • Overpasses with ramps at major intersections
  • Minimum number of traffic signals
  • Three continuous travel lanes in each direction
  • Concrete or landscaped median barriers
  • A new bridge crossing at the Agua Fria River
