Glendale, AZ - Downtown Parking Structure

Project Background

Parking is an essential customer amenity in Glendale’s downtown. It supports existing businesses that generate sales tax and services that Glendale citizens frequent. It provides critical infrastructure, encourages land use efficiency and helps define preferred pedestrian and vehicle pathways. Parking is an important recruiting tool for new restaurants, office and retail businesses. It serves to strengthen surrounding neighborhoods by directing traffic to commercial areas.

At the September 5th Council Workshop, staff and the representative from DFDG presented a report on the Downtown Parking Study that included a parking inventory within the boundaries of 59th and 56th avenues and Myrtle and Lamar. They identified a total of 2,648 parking spaces within the area available for general public use. Of that total, 724 are in public parking lots and 725 are located within the City Hall and Public Safety garages with some restrictions on public use. A total of 463 spaces are located in private lots and 736 spaces are on-street parking.

At the conclusion of the Workshop, the City Council recommended that a new mixed-use parking garage be built at 58th & Palmaire. The 600-space parking structure will replace the existing 140-space surface parking lot. It is planned to have one level of underground parking, approximately 11,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and three parking levels above the ground level. The retail area will face north toward Catlin Court. Entrances and exits will front 58th Drive and 58th Avenue.
