The workshop will be held from 1 – 3 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Glendale City Hall, 59th and Glendale avenues. Grant applications will be available at the workshop.
In order to be considered for funding, social service agencies must be non-profit 501c3 organizations that serve Glendale residents. Agencies must also be operational for at least one year prior to applying for grant funds, which range from $2,500 to $20,000.

From The Heart is a partnership with Glendale residents and businesses, BHHS Legacy Foundation, city of Glendale and Quality of Life Community Services Inc. Funds are raised through the generosity of residents, who add $1 to their monthly city utility bill payments and through corporate donations.
The BHHS Legacy Foundation provides a 50-cent match for every dollar that is donated to the program. Since From The Heart began in 1997, more than $1.5 million has been raised.

Gabriel's Angels: Pets Helping Kids
The goal of Gabriel’s Angels is to improve the emotional health and well-being of children and help them develop those skills that are precursors to preventing the cycle of domestic violence. These seven core strengths are: attachment, confidence, self-regulation, affiliation, awareness, tolerance, and respect. It is our belief that the bond between a therapy dog and a child is strong enough to break the cycle of violence. Gabriel’s Angels is Arizona’s only nonprofit organization focused on delivering healing pet therapy to abused, neglected and at-risk children, nurturing their ability to love and trust, thereby freeing them from the cycle of violence.
Gabriel’s Angels was formed in 2000 out of a pressing and documented need in the community to enhance the lives of abused, neglected and at-risk children. Research has shown that an abused or neglected child is more likely to grow up to be an abuser and there is a link between violence directed towards animals and eventual violence directed towards humans. Children who witness violence are more likely to grow up to be abusive.
Gabriel's Angels partners with Glendale area organizations to reach children living in crisis nurseries, domestic violence and homeless shelters. Currently, there are pet therapy teams visiting at ten facilities that provide a safe place for children throughout Glendale. From the Heart funding provides pet therapy services for over 1,300 abused or neglected children living in Glendale facilities. |

| From the Heart Program Set for Another Record-Breaking Year!
One anonymous donor challenges others to give more
The 2006-07 fundraising year for the city of Glendale's From the Heart program was one of many firsts. Corporate donations boosted dollar levels significantly thanks to more than $43,000 in giving by a variety of Valley businesses. This past fundraising season also saw the largest donation from a private citizen in the amount of $1,000. And though the donor wishes to remain anonymous, this person is offering up a challenge to other citizens looking for a good cause to support--give more! Read more |

From the Heart Focus: Solecito Services, Inc.
A Helping Hand When It Is Most Needed
Solecito Services, Inc. is a nonprofit social service agency dedicated to improving the quality of life of West Valley residents. Solecito is a Spanish word that, loosely translated, means “a little bit of sunshine,” which is what the organization hopes to provide the people it serves. Located in Peoria, Solecito has been lending home health equipment on a temporary basis to residents living in Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, El Mirage, Goodyear and Litchfield Park, and other residents of western Maricopa County for 25 years.
Solecito lends more than 30 different types of home-use medical equipment, including hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches and more. They lend more than 4,600 pieces of equipment annually! The equipment is typically loaned for six-month periods, but the loan period can be extended to meet their customers’ needs.
Solecito assists residents of our community at a time when their finances have already been stretched to the limit, they and their families are enduring a health crisis, and they may otherwise be unable to obtain the equipment they need to recover from surgery or deal with a terminal illness. Because of community donations, volunteers and grants from organizations such as From the Heart, Soliceto will continue to provide valuable in-home services at minimal cost to residents and families in West Valley communities who are in need.
Help Solecito Services, Inc. and other social service agencies carry on their mission each and every day by donating to Glendale’s From the Heart program. One hundred percent of the funds collected for From the Heart go to agencies that help Glendale residents in need.
If you have not added $1 to your water bill in the past, please do so on your next bill. If you already donate your $12 annually, but would like to contribute more, you can make out a check to From the Heart and mail or bring it to the Glendale Customer Service Office, 5850 W. Glendale Ave., Glendale, AZ 85301.

Straight ‘From the Heart’ - Corporate Donations Making a Difference
Glendale’s From the Heart program recently received a huge boost, thanks to four corporate donors and the program partner, BHHS Legacy Foundation. This program would not be possible without our residents and program partner, and these recent corporate donations will make a positive impact in our community.
Glendale Glitters sponsor, Starbucks, sold coffee during Glitters event nights with all donated proceeds going to the city’s From the Heart program. The four nights’ total of donations received was $4,200. Honeywell recently donated $1,292 to From the Heart, and in conjunction with the opening of Westgate City Center, Ellman Cos. donated
$8,190 to the program, as well. From the Heart was also the recipient of a $25,000 donation from Lund Cadillac. Read more. |

From the Heart Focus: West Valley Child Crisis Center
West Valley Child Crisis Center is in the business of saving children’s lives. This might sound overstated until you enter the shelter and hear some of the stories of the children that have been provided a safe home in a time of desperate need.
It is the only temporary shelter for abused children in the West Valley, and the largest non-profit shelter in Arizona. The West Valley Child Crisis Center provides temporary shelter and supervision for children who are victims of, or at risk of, abuse, neglect or abandonment, in a safe, nurturing, home-like environment staffed by quality care providers and to interact with the community to increase awareness of, and work to prevent, the cycle of child abuse.
Because of your 2005 From the Heart donations, in part, each child was taken care of by well-trained, nurturing staff and provided a warm bed, clothing, nutritionally-balanced meals; each child received services that responded to their medical, emotional and behavioral needs; each child attended a daily educational program suited to their age and developmental stage where they can begin to experience success; each child was given guidance, learning how to form trusting relationships with the caring staff, other children and volunteers, as they begin the healing process.
Help West Valley Child Crisis Center, and other social service agencies, carry on their mission each and every day, by donating to Glendale’s From the Heart program.
The BHHS Legacy Foundation matches every dollar you donate with an additional 50 cents.

From the Heart Supports Glendale’s YWCA
Senior Meals Program
For more than 90 years, the YWCA of Maricopa County has served the Valley, working to effect positive change in our communities through essential programs and services to improve the lives of homeless, abused women, children, seniors and disabled adults, and those seeking respect in a multicultural community.
The Glendale YWCA Senior Center has provided meals to Glendale residents since 1975. Adequate nutrition is critical to health and the quality of life for older people and can help seniors remain at home and independent for as long as possible. Statistics show nutrition programs save money and prevent or delay unnecessary placement of seniors in nursing homes. They also help people manage chronic conditions, thus avoiding costly hospital stays.
The YWCA serves meals to Glendale’s low-income seniors Monday through Friday, 252 days a year! Your contribution to From the Heart, helps support this valued and crucial service. In 2006, From the Heart allocated $20,000 to the YWCA Congregate Meals Program. Without your From the Heart donations, the YWCA could not prepare all of the 45,000 hot nutritious senior meals it will serve this year at the Glendale YWCA, the Glendale Adult Center and the Glendale Community Center.
