A candle accidentally left burning while the homeowners went next door caused this fire.  The National Fire Protection Association warns, extinguish taper and pillar candles when they burn to within two inches of the holder, and votive and container candles before the last half-inch of wax begins to melt.  Also, extinguish all candles when leaving the room or when going to sleep.
