Fire - Medic 155
What is Glendale Fire Department's Medic 155?
 Medic 155 is a unique ambulance that is a part of the fire department’s fleet of emergency response vehicles. It’s a unique program because it is a first time ever public-private partnership between the Glendale Fire Department, Midwestern University and Southwest Ambulance. Its main purpose is to train new paramedics.
Each ambulance is in service 9-hours a day and responds to higher priority medical calls (called Advanced Life Support or “ALS”) in the city of Glendale. Upon the unit’s arrival, the care that has been started by the crew on the fire engine is seamlessly transferred over to the paramedics who are on the Medic 155. This allows the engine to return to available status and protect its assigned area of the city. The high volume of ALS calls handled by Medic 155 during their 9-hour shifts provide the paramedic student the confidence and patient skills necessary for success. This unit also provides medical observation only rides for RN's and Doctors as well as ride-a-longs to Midwestern University Medical students and hospital professionals from around the state. During the 9-hour shift, there is abundant communication, training, teamwork, and camaraderie. This ultimately leads to outstanding emergency patient care in our community.
Medic 155 first went into service on September 1, 2004.
How do I ride along on Medic 155?
If you are currently a medical professional employed by a local health care provider and are interested in a ride-a-long shift please contact:

In your e-mail request please provide two dates that you are able to ride Monday -Saturday from
9 a.m. to 7 p.m., an e-mail reply with the date chosen will be sent to you within 10 working days. Ride-a-longs on Medic 155 are only available to active members of the medical profession.
Where does your ride begin?
Each shift starts promptly at 9:00 am at Midwestern Clinic Station located at the Midwestern University.

What should I wear?
Remember you're climbing on and off of an ambulance all day so good shoes, long pants and a nice shirt. No uniforms please and no hand bags. Just carry your ID and a few dollars for lunch and snacks. You may carry a cell phone during the shift but it must be kept in the silent mode.
What will I do during calls?
The rescue ambulance that you will ride on will not be transporting emergency patients. Southwest Ambulance Company is in charge of all patient transports with the assistance of Glendale Paramedics. Your ride-a-long is for observation only. The paramedics will direct you throughout the shift. It is important to remember:
- Never remove your seat belt before the unit is stopped and in park.
- Stay out of traffic at all times, remember passing cars are very dangerous.
- Never wander away from the paramedics on scene or at the hospital.
- You will be provided a fire department safety vest to make you more visible and to let ER staff and the police know that you are part of the Medic 155 team that day.
- Stay alert at all times; know what is going on around you.
Final Reminders:
- You will need to sign waivers of liability for both Glendale Fire Dept and Southwest Ambulance. Please print them from the web site and bring them with you completed.

laws apply in the field as well as the hospital so please respect our patient’s privacy at all times.
