Fire - Ask a Firefighter Columns

Hiking

As we expect to reach the 90 degree mark in the upcoming week, the Glendale Fire Department is asking valley hikers to consider the change in the weather and plan accordingly. Each year valley firefighters respond to well over 100 mountain rescues at several valley hiking hot spots. Several mountain rescues are due to dehydration and dehydration can be deadly. In this segment of ‘Ask a Firefighter’, we answer the question, “what should I keep in mind for my hike?” Hiking is a great way to stay in shape and it should be done using the following safety tips:

  • Stay hydrated and be sure to have plenty of water with you.
  • Stay on trails to maximize safety.
  • Wear proper foot wear to minimize slipping and injury.
  • Communicate, keep a cell phone and let someone know where you’re going and when you should be back.
  • Though it is encouraged to start your exercise early in the morning to  beat the heat, remember that parks are closed from dusk to dawn.
  • Wear a hat.
  • Use sunscreen.
  • Stretch before and after your hike.

Have a great time on your hike. As always, the Glendale Fire Department thanks you for your continued support.
