Fire - Ask a Firefighter Columns

Glendale Republic
11-12-08

Recently firefighters responded to a 1st Alarm car crash scene in Glendale with eight patients including six children. The children’s ages ranged from one to twelve. One adult was transported to a local hospital and fortunately all six children were not injured in the crash. This was good news for the children involved but unfortunately its not always good news with these types of emergencies.

In this installment of 'Ask a Firefighter’, Glendale Firefighters would like to ask you some questions:

  • Is your child safety seat properly installed in your vehicle?
  • Are you using the proper seat for your child’s age, weight and height?
  • Is the seat adjusted properly?
  • You may not realize it, but 80-90 percent of all child safety seats are being misused! Don’t let your seat be one of the statistics.

The Glendale Fire Department is committed to delivering important car seat education to the community. Firefighters serving as certified car seat technicians inspect seats by appointment. To make an appointment to have your child safety seat inspected or to learn how to properly install your seat, call our car seat hotline at 623-930-SEAT (7328). The safety of your children is important to us.  If you are a Glendale resident facing financial difficulties, the Glendale Fire Department can assist with your car seat needs.  Please call the hotline number for more information.

Remember to buckle up every time you get in the vehicle!  Children 12 and under should be properly buckled in the backseat, every time; and children over 40 pounds and under 4’9 should be restrained a booster seat.  The Glendale Fire Department cares about the safety of your child!

The Glendale Fire Department and Safe Kids are having a car seat check up and education event on Saturday, November 22, at Starbucks located at 20249 N. 67th Avenue. The event hours are from 8 to 11 a.m. This event is at no cost to the public.
