Defensive Driving School is an 4 1/2-hour diversion class that results in a dismissal of a violation. The class may only be completed once every 24 months for eligible violations. You may attend DDS for only one violation, even if multiple eligible violations are listed on the citation. You must pay a fine, appear in court, or request a hearing for the other violations. If you have a commercial driver license, you are not eligible for DDS regardless of the vehicle driven.
You may be eligible to attend Defensive Driving School:
- if you did not attend a class for a citation issued within 24 months of the date of your current citation
- if the current violation did not involve an accident with serious injury or death
Advantages of attending DDS
- No fine, conviction or points will be placed on your driving record.
- Drivers with a graduated license (under 18) will not have to attend mandatory Traffic Survival School (TSS) through the Motor Vehicle Department, and drivers with a red light violation will not have to attend mandatory Traffic Survival School (TSS) through the Motor Vehicle Department.
