Volunteer Position Description
Position Title: Periodicals Volunteer, Main Library
Responsible To: Reference Department Volunteer Coordinator and, if applicable, Glendale Public Library staff.
Job Summary: Organizes, straightens and weeds library publications including magazines, journals, reviews and other publications
Essential Functions: Works from a master list of library publications to determine holding status, keeping track of starting and stopping points. Puts publications in order by year/month and stacks back issues in periodical cabinets. Pulls back issues of library publications, checks all periodical shelves regularly and straightens as needed. Reports damaged materials to reference staff, assists library users by answering basic questions or referring them to library staff. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Time Required: Minimum of 3 hours per week.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skills in organizing materials alphabetically and chronologically and customer service are necessary. The ability to communicate effectively with the public, establish and maintain effective working relationships with the library staff and interact pleasantly with patrons is essential. .
Working Conditions: Volunteer will be working on the public floor of the library. Position requires bending, squatting and shelving materials. Volunteer must be able to push a cart loaded with materials the length of the library.
Minimum Qualifications: Ability to work both independently and as a team member to ensure all assigned tasks are completed; strong customer service skills; ability to understand and perform written and oral instructions; ability to stand for extended periods of time.
