Volunteer Position Description
Position Title: Disc Repair
Volunteer, Main or Foothills Branch Library
Responsible To: Circulation Dept. Volunteer Coordinator and, if applicable, Glendale Public Library staff.
Job Summary: Clean and repair CD/DVD discs identified by circulation staff using the Disc Lap Polishing Machine.
Essential Functions :Volunteer will be trained by circulation staff to run the disc polisher. Volunteer duties include: differentiate which discs need to be cleaned and/or run through the polisher, set up polisher (fill polisher with water and polishing compound), polish and clean discs, take apart and clean polishing machine thoroughly at end of shift and capture statistics for circ staff.
Time Required: 4 hour shift once or twice a week. Days and times volunteered are dependent on library needs and availability of volunteer.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Previous experience handling machinery/equipment is preferred. Volunteer must be able to follow a 7 page list of extremely detailed steps and procedures. Must be able to carry a heavy bucket of water 50 yards. Manual dexterity and strength is needed to clean and set up machine.
Working Conditions: Equipment is located in the Circulation workroom. This is a very busy, hectic work space. Volunteer must be able to tune out noise and focus on task. Volunteer will work independently at a work station with a table where the volunteer sits and sorts materials while the disc is cleaning. Polishing compounds and cleaners are used which may cause skin and/or respiratory irritation. Volunteer is responsible for set up/break down and cleaning of complex equipment.
Minimum Qualifications: Must be over 18. Must be able to work independently. Knowledge or experience running machinery/equipment is preferred.
