Volunteer Position Description
Position Title: Computer Tutor
Responsible To: Reference Department Volunteer Coordinator and, if applicable, Glendale Public Library staff.
Job Summary: Performs direct customer service duties at the Adult Reference desk involving assistance and instruction on the use of library computers
Essential Functions: Assists and instructs library patrons in the use of library computers, email, software, electronic resources and general internet applications. Assist patrons with the print management system, including replacing printer paper and monitoring printer supplies and patron computer usage. Assist library users in connecting to the public network with wireless and laptop computers. Answer basic questions regarding computer usage. Troubleshoot minor hardware and software problems. Assists staff in setting up meeting rooms for programs, demos, workshops and meetings. Assist librarians on an as-needed basis. Performs other related duties and technology-related projects as required.
Time Required: Minimum of 2 hours per week.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of personal computers and automated library systems. Background in customer service is preferred. The ability to communicate effectively and interact pleasantly with library patrons is necessary, the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff is essential.
Working Conditions: Volunteer will be working on the public floor of the library answering patron questions.
Minimum Qualifications: Basic knowledge of web-based email, web browsers and Microsoft Word is required. Some knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint is helpful, but not required. Training in library-specific software, policies and procedures is provided.
