Volunteer Position Description
Position Title: Circulation Desk Volunteer
Responsible To: Circulation Volunteer Coordinator and, if applicable, City of Glendale staff.
Job Summary: Assist circulation staff with circulation desk duties including manning the circulation desk, interacting with the public and handling money.
Essential Functions: Issue new library cards , verify City of Glendale residency, check materials in and out, enter patron data into library database, update patron records, collect fees and fines, answer patron questions, refer patrons to staff as needed, answer phones and perform other circulation duties as needed.
Time Required: Days and times volunteered are dependent on library needs and the availability of the volunteer. A one year commitment is requested prior to training. Typical shifts are 3-4 hours, once or twice a week. Volunteers selected for this position will need to attend cash handling training given by City of Glendale staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Preference is given to volunteers with customer service background. Cash handling experience including debit/credit card/check handling is necessary. Knowledge of library database is helpful. Ability to read a detailed City of Glendale street map is mandatory. Ability to interact pleasantly with public, cooperate with staff, interpret and apply library policies, work independently with attention to detail and accuracy is necessary.
Working Conditions: Volunteer will work behind the Circulation Desk performing customer service duties. Requires standing for long periods of time. Extensive contact with the public is an integral part of this position including collecting fines for overdue and damaged materials. Volunteer may be asked to man circ desk alone after extensive training.
Minimum Qualifications: Must be 18 years and older. PC skills are necessary along with keyboarding speed. Volunteer must be able to bend, stand, lift materials and push book carts full of heavy books.
