Volunteer Position Description
Position Title: Book Sale Volunteer
Responsible To: Technical Services Volunteer Coordinator and if applicable, Glendale Public Library staff.
Job Summary: Sort, price, organize and shelve donated/withdrawn materials in Brown Street Books sale area and storage room of library.
Essential Functions: Process withdrawn library materials to be sold in book sale. Unpack and sort donated materials. Identify damaged, outdated materials for recycle. Recycle materials following City of Glendale guidelines. Search books online for value, price materials and shelve in proper areas. Stock, straighten and display books, magazines and AV materials in public book sale area. Perform other duties as needed.
Time Required: Days and times volunteered are dependent on library needs and the availability of volunteer. Shifts are usually 3-4 hours, one or two days a week, Mon. – Fri.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to interact pleasantly with patrons, follow instructions and work independently is necessary as well as attention to detail and accuracy. Basic computer skills are a plus as well as an understanding of the Dewey Decimal system.
Working Conditions: Dust from books and other sources and may pose a problem for volunteers with respiratory problems. Volunteers stocking the Brown Street book sale will have contact with the public. Position involves bending, stooping, lifting materials and pushing carts loaded with heavy books.
Minimum Qualifications: 14 and older. Volunteer must be able to differentiate fiction from non-fiction materials and push carts loaded with heavy books back and forth several times a shift between the storage room and book sale area. Ability to follow instructions, work independently and with accuracy is essential.
