Volunteer Position Description
Position Title: Book Mending Volunteer
Responsible To: Technical Services Volunteer Coordinator and Processing staff.
Job Summary: Mends library book materials identified by staff. Basic book processing and cleaning of books as needed. Volunteer will be trained and supervised by Technical Services staff.
Essential Functions: Mending of book materials (hardback, paperback, youth, teen, adult, reference, etc.) using techniques taught by processing staff. Supplies used include: glue, scissors, stapler, tape machines, jacketing, barcodes and labels. May be asked to clean books or help with retro projects as needed.
Time Required: Days and time volunteered are dependent on the needs of the library and availability of volunteer. Shifts: 9 am – noon, Mon. – Fri.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Basic knowledge of book mending is preferred. The ability to use the equipment listed below is required. Fine motor skills and hand strength are necessary including the ability to perform precise label, glue and tape placement.
Working Conditions: The volunteer will perform their duties seated in a work station located in the volunteer workroom. Equipment and supplies used by the volunteer include: scissors, tape machine, barcode duplicator, stapler, glue dispenser and paper cutters. Book dust as well as irritants from mending supplies may be present in varying degrees and may pose a problem for those with respiratory problems.
Minimum Qualifications: Ability to follow instructions, work independently and cooperation with others is essential. Volunteer must be age 16 or older.
