The Flat Murphy Project
A centennial activity has been developed specifically for local public schools and students
of all ages
In July, Glendale kicked off a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation as a city. We are extremely excited about this upcoming milestone and very, very proud of our place in Arizona’s history. Of the 90 cities and towns in the state, Glendale was the 20th to incorporate on June 18, 1910.
In recognition of the centennial anniversary of the city’s incorporation, Glendale will be organizing various events and activities for our residents to enjoy. One centennial activity has been developed specifically for local public schools and students of all ages to participate in.
Many of you are familiar with the international Flat Stanley Project (flatstanley.com), where children take pictures of Flat Stanleys, which resemble paper dolls, at various landmarks around the world, as well as at sporting events, festivals and/or with friends, family or very important people.
Meet Murphy
Glendale has taken this Flat Stanley concept and given it a local spin to create the Flat Murphy Project (named after W.J. Murphy, the founder of the City of Glendale). The goal of the Flat Murphy Project is to capture the people, places and events through photographs that represent our great city – all through the eyes of our students!
The Flat Murphys need to be photographed with a person, place, thing or at an event that shows why Glendale is a great hometown city. Who or what is photographed is open to students’ interpretation, and we encourage students to be as creative as possible. The deadline to submit a photograph along with the one-page essay that describes the photo is November 16, 2009. (See guidelines and entry forms below.)
Each school may enter one submission from each of the following categories:
- Kindergarten – 2nd grade
- 3rd-4th grades
- 5th-6th grades
- 7th-8th grades
- 9th -10th grades
- 11th-12th grades
The Flat Murphys will be in the shape of gingerbread men as all the schools’ entries will be displayed at Glendale’s Gingerbread Nights event in downtown Glendale December 4-5, 2009. There will be special awards given to the winning categories to recognize your school’s effort, hometown spirit and participation in this school-based centennial activity taking place in Glendale.
Getting Started
If you are interested in participating in this project or have any questions, please contact Heidi McCarthy in the Glendale Office of Special Events at (623) 930-3063 or Hmccarthy@GlendaleAZ.com.
Flat Murphys will be sent out with the guidleines of the project and a copy of “Glendale: Century of Diversity” hardbound history book. Teachers are encouraged to use the history books to help students learn more about their hometown and become interested in participating in the Flat Murphy Project.
