Workshop Description:
1. Tiny Mighty Spirits: Do you ever wish you could fly or have a super-human power? If so, what would it be? We will explore the role that dolls and figures have played in world cultures as you embellish your own wooden figures of inspiration, power, mystery, and energy.
2. Jungle Animal Dioramas: Wild cats, monkeys, exotic birds and elephants, oh my! This workshop will take you into the jungles of South America and Africa to learn about the native animals and plants. We will create our own jungle animals out of clay and an environment for them to live.
3. Funky Hats: Wearing a hat can protect you from the sun, rain or even the bitter cold. They can also show others what your job might be (police officer, queen, or chef). The hats we will create will tell others about your interests, personality and personal style. Whether it is embellished with jewels or twisted into a unique shape, your hat will be funky!
4. Treasure Boxes: Do pirates really keep their treasure in a box? What if the treasures were on the inside and outside of the box? We will embellish and fill a tiny box with precious objects, images and cloth to tell a story about you and your family or friends. You can even bring your own photos to add to the box!

Planet of Percussion: A Hands-On World Music Workshop
Instructor: Will Clipman
Dates: July 6-9 and July 13-16, 2009
Morning Sessions: 9:00 AM-12:00 PM for ages 6-9
Afternoon Sessions: 1:00 PM-4:00 PM for ages 10-13
Cost: Non-refundable application fee of $20.00 per child
Location: Fruit Packing Shed at Sahuaro Ranch
9802 N. 59th Ave. Glendale, AZ 85302
Workshop Description:
Participants learn to speak the universal language of rhythm by using three hand-held percussion instruments (the agogo, or two-toned iron bell; the claves, or hardwood rhythm sticks; and the axatse, or gourd rattle). Once we’ve mastered the individual voices of the instruments, we learn to integrate the rhythms into a complex four-part polyrhythm by following the heartbeat of the Mother Drum, or songba. We then orchestrate a musical composition, incorporating elements of intro and outro; verse, chorus and bridge; tempo and dynamics; and crescendo and diminuendo. Along the way, we learn about the Mathematics of Music and the Science of Sound, and explore traditional techniques of drum construction and tuning, making our experience a truly interdisciplinary and multicultural journey to the Planet of Percussion®. We have a ton of fun raising a joyful racket while we cultivate and elevate fundamental learning and life skills such as pattern recognition, language acquisition, mathematical computation, right-left brain neural integration, concentration, coordination, communication, and cooperation, all in a creative and supportive atmosphere. The workshop culminates with an informal community showcase presentation of our music: The Planetary Players Percussion Ensemble®!
A drummer since the age of three, Will Clipman is a four-time Grammy® Nominee, a two-time Native American Music Award® Winner, and a New Age Reporter Music Award® Winner. He has recorded over fifty albums, including twenty-one for Canyon Records, where he is regarded as their house percussionist. Will currently holds the heartbeat for the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet, the William Eaton Ensemble, the Wilde Boys (Nakai, Eaton & Clipman), the 7/20 Twins (Gentle Thunder & Will Clipman), the Mary Redhouse & Will Clipman Duo, the Amber Norgaard Band, and ARC (Gabriel Ayala, Vince Redhouse & Will Clipman). Will is also a two-time Tucson Area Music Award® Winner, and has been inducted into the Tucson Musicians Museum for his contributions to the musical community in his hometown. His latest Canyon Records release is his solo CD Pathfinder, which showcases Will’s pan-global palette of drums, melodic percussion, wind instruments, and vocal chants in thirteen of his own original compositions.
