traffic light Change to Traffic Patterns Taking Place
The City of Glendale Transportation Division will be restricting left turns at the Arrowhead Plaza/Denaro Village Property driveway on southbound 67th Avenue south of the Loop 101.

An analysis of the area has shown that southbound left turning vehicles are getting hit by northbound vehicles in the outside lanes. Nearly all the crashes are happening between the hours of 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. when traffic is backed up during peak times and gaps in traffic streams become challenging for turning vehicles into and out of the center.

Based on this information, City of Glendale Transportation staff with input from the Glendale Police Department has determined that left turn movements into and out of the center should be restricted weekdays between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.  These restrictions will go into effect starting on May 8th. A left turning option will still exist at the traffic signal at Behrend Dr during the restriction period.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. However, the City is determined to maintain traffic mobility and safety along our 700 plus mile street network.

Pavement management

FY 2016/2017 Pavement Management Projects
The Pavement Management Program (PMP) consists of the rehabilitation of poor and deteriorating streets within the City of Glendale with the application of common treatments as well as other pavement preservations methods. The plan to extend the overall life-expectancy of the City of Glendale’s streets through the most efficient and cost-saving measures is carried out through a series of pavement preservation projects. The FY 2016-17 PMP Mill & Overlay (M&O), Crack Seal and Slurry Seal projects are presently concentrated in the southern portion of the City.

For complete details on the PMP projects, please download the flyer here.

Yellow Arrows

Flashing Yellow Arrow
The use of flashing yellow arrows (FYA) at signalized intersections to control left turning traffic was recently approved by the federal government after studies concluded that flashing arrows provide numerous benefits including:

  • Enhanced understanding by motorists when using arrows instead of solid green indications;
  • Enhanced safety; and
  • Improved operation by minimizing delays.

FYA at a traffic signal includes a flashing yellow arrow signal head in addition to the standard red, yellow and green arrow heads over the left-turn lane. When illuminated, the flashing yellow arrow allows waiting motorists to make a left-hand turn after yielding to oncoming traffic. Otherwise, the new traffic signals work the same as traditional signals. The City of Glendale has begun a program to convert left-turn movements at various signalized intersections to FYA operation with the purpose of improving safety and operations.  Current locations with flashing yellow arrows include:

  • 59th and Olive Avenues (during nighttime and weekends)
  • 51st and Peoria Avenues
  • 59th Avenue and Union Hills Drive
  • 51st and Glendale Avenues
  • 67th Avenue and Deer Valley Road

Glendale Transportation has made many safety improvements to the intersection of 59th & Olive.  The most recent improvement is a flashing yellow  left turn arrow. Watch now

A total of 22 additional major arterial intersections throughout the City are in various stages of design and will be converted over the next 18 months.  The remaining 23 FYA candidate intersections will be designed using federal safety funds, with construction funding not currently identified - view map here.

Park Changes are Coming
Changes are coming to the Thunderbird Road driveway. This driveway is being converted to allow for inbound traffic only. All traffic will need to exit onto 59th Avenue. These changes are necessary to allow for safe traffic flow into and out of the park.

Beginning Monday, April 17th, “DO NOT ENTER/WRONG WAY” signs and directional arrow pavement markings will be installed as shown on the map.  Please adhere to these restrictions.

We apologize for any inconveniences that this will cause in relation to your park activities. However, the City is determined and committed to ensuring the safety and mobility for all park users.

Please contact the Transportation Department at 623.930.2940 or if you have any questions about this access change. Restriction Map
