Agua Fria Freeway’s interchange at Union Hills Drive to be widened

ADOT has partnered with the cities of Peoria and Glendale on a $20.6 million project, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, to improve Loop 101 freeway access via Beardsley Road while easing traffic demands at the Union Hills Drive interchange.  The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2011. The project’s primary improvements include:

• Widening Union Hills Drive at Loop 101 and expanding the northbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Union Hills to improve traffic flow.
• Extending Beardsley Road between 81st Avenue and Loop 101 to connect Beardsley to a new southbound freeway frontage road.  Constructing the southbound frontage road between 75th Avenue and Union Hills Drive while adjusting the southbound off-ramp for access to both Beardsley Road and Union Hills Drive.
• Adding a separate bridge at the Union Hills Drive interchange designed solely to allow southbound frontage road traffic to make an unrestricted U-turn to access north and eastbound Loop 101.
