Police - Recruitment

Trainee

$47,612 (While attending the Police Academy)

starting at $49,992

Shift differential and Bilingual pay are also available.

Police Officer Job Elements

Police Trainees who receive a hire offer will be sent to an Arizona Certified Law Enforcement academy for a period of approximately 18 weeks to prepare for appointment as a Police Officer. After successful completion of the Police Academy, employees are sworn and a 14-week Field Training Officer program commences; formal on-the-job training is provided during this period.

Additional Police Officer job elements are as follows:

  • Patrols assigned area of the city, by automobile, motorcycle, on foot or bicycle, for the prevention of crime and enforcement of all applicable criminal, traffic and liquor laws and City Ordinances.
  • Responds to calls for service involving crimes such as robberies, assaults, homicides and narcotics violations.
  • Responds to general public service calls for civil or societal problems.
  • Secures the scene of a crime; makes arrests; books prisoners.
  • Responds to hazardous material incidents and traffic accidents; investigates traffic accidents; detects impaired drivers; administers first aid; directs traffic and requests medical assistance.
  • Prepares reports to accurately document information.
  • Participates in problem oriented policing efforts by identifying problem areas, recommending and implementing solution, and monitoring the results.
  • Handles hostage negotiations, performs suicide prevention interventions; transports mentally ill patients; performs surveillance operations.
  • Writes and executes search warrants.
  • Serves court orders, arrest warrants and mental health orders.
  • Selects, directs, trains and maintains canines.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of graduation from the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy.

Special Requirements

  • Must be in sound physical and mental health.
  • Vision: Must have at least 20/80 vision, correctable to 20/20 contact lenses or glasses; or 20/200 vision, correctable to 20/20 with soft contacts.
  • Hearing: Uncorrected hearing with no loss greater than 25 db in the 500, 1000, 2000, or 3000 hertz frequencies.
  • Rotating shift work is required and applicants must have an Arizona Class D operator’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Must meet the City of Glendale hiring guidelines on drug usage.
  • Any involvement in felony related activity, identified in a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination is disqualifying.

How to Apply

  1. Complete a City of Glendale application
  2. Complete the Background Questionnaire and waiver forms 
  3. Supply three personal reference letters

Bring all these items listed above completed, to the testing site.  The physical agility test takes place at the academy.  Please note that one of the Waiver Forms require notarization. If your application and supporting documentation is incomplete, you WILL NOT be allowed to proceed in the testing process until all materials are completed.

Non-sworn applicants for Police Trainee positions are required to successfully pass a written test and a physical assessment test when they apply. Those candidates successful in passing both tests will have their application and supporting documentation screened for the minimum qualifications, and will then be scheduled at a later date for a background interview. Study guides for the written test are available upon request from the City of Glendale's Human Resources Department or the Police Department. Must be picked up in person. If you are out of state, study guides can be mailed through Human Resources.

Candidates who successfully complete the background interview will have their names placed on a list for this position. The Police Department may use all lists for Police Officer positions simultaneously. The Police Department is under no obligation to process or hire recruit candidates prior to AZPOST certified candidates.

Upon successful completion of the background interview process, candidates may be scheduled for a selection interview.

When selected to proceed in the process, candidates will be scheduled for a polygraph exam.
Upon completion of the polygraph exam, candidates may be selected for a psychological evaluation and medical examination after a conditional offer of hire is made.  The Police Chief will make final appointment.
