Police - Recruitment

Reserve Officer

The City of Glendale is actively seeking qualified men and women for the position of Reserve Officer. If you possess the highest level of integrity and honesty, take pride in your community and have a commitment to both excellence and service, you are encouraged to apply.

The Glendale Police Department’s Reserve Division is comprised of Arizona residents who volunteer their time performing general law enforcement functions for the citizens of Glendale. Officers come from a broad professional background, yet share a common interest in police work and volunteerism.

Interested citizens must complete a standard employment application through the city’s Human Resources Department. The testing process and general qualifications are the same for all sworn positions, whether full-time or volunteer. Successful applicants will attend more than 650 hours of classes at an AzPOST law enforcement training academy, unless they hold a current peace officer’s certificate from AzPOST.

Upon graduation from the academy, officers begin a two-year field training program leading to advancement to solo-officer/car-commander status. Officers, whether full-time or volunteer, are required to maintain specific in-service training standards designed to keep them abreast of the latest trends in law and enforcement techniques, and other professional proficiencies.

Reserve officers are required to work no less than sixteen hours per month, as averaged each quarter, to meet minimum AzPOST requirements. Most officers volunteer an average of 24-40 hours per month, working uniformed patrol, Criminal Investigations Bureau or special-assignment tasks for the department based on aptitude and skills.

Benefits

  • Reserve Officer Program tuition paid
  • Uniform Allowance
  • Customary Officer Equipment
  • Ability to Work Off-Duty
  • Opportunity to become fulltime (Must be in good standing as a Reserve Officer and Background Updated)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of graduation an AzPOST law enforcement training academy.

Special Requirements

  • Must be in sound physical and mental health.
  • Vision: Must have at least 20/80 vision, correctable to 20/20 contact lenses or glasses; or 20/200 vision, correctable to 20/20 with soft contacts.
  • Hearing: Uncorrected hearing with no loss greater than 25 db in the 500, 1000, 2000, or 3000 hertz frequencies.
  • Applicants must have an Arizona Class D operator’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Must meet the City of Glendale hiring guidelines on drug usage.
  • Any involvement in felony related activity, identified in a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination is disqualifying.

How to Apply

  1. Complete a City of Glendale application
  2. Complete the Background Questionnaire and waiver forms
  3. Supply three personal reference letters

Bring all these items listed above completed, to the testing site.  The physical agility test takes place at the academy.  Please note that one of the Waiver Forms require notarization. If your application and supporting documentation is incomplete, you WILL NOT be allowed to proceed in the testing process until all materials are completed.

Applicants for Reserve Officer positions are required to successfully pass a written test and a physical assessment test when they apply. Those candidates successful in passing both tests will have their application and supporting documentation screened for the minimum qualifications, and will then be scheduled at a later date for a background interview.

Candidates who successfully complete the background interview will have their names placed on a list for this position. The Police Department may use all lists for Reserve Officer positions simultaneously. The Police Department is under no obligation to process Reserve candidates prior to AzPOST certified candidates.

Upon successful completion of the background interview process, candidates may be scheduled for a selection interview.

When selected to proceed in the process, candidates will be scheduled for a polygraph exam.
Upon completion of the polygraph exam, candidates may be selected for a psychological evaluation and medical examination. The Police Chief will make final appointment.

Candidates who successfully complete the Academy are eligible to have their tuition reimbursed through the City’s Tuition reimbursement program.  If a candidate has their tuition reimbursed, the candidate must sign an agreement requiring the candidate to pay back a proportion of this tuition should the candidate accept employment with another law enforcement agency.

If you have any questions, please call 623-930-COPS (2677).
