On the Job with Glendale’s new Police Chief Steven Conrad
During the past several months, the city of Glendale conducted an extensive national recruitment process to find a new Chief of Police. On Nov. 18, the city announced Steven Conrad of the Louisville Police Department as its next chief. Chief Conrad officially began his duties with the city Wednesday, Dec. 28. His busy first day included meeting several of Glendale’s officers during a briefing at the Glendale Police Gateway Substation.
About the Chief
Prior to joining the Glendale Police Department, Steven Conrad joined the Louisville Police Department in 1980 as a patrol officer and worked his way through the ranks before being named Assistant Police Chief in 1997.
Career Highlights
- 1980 – 1984: Joined department as patrol officer and worked several assignments, including exploited and missing children unit.
- 1984 – 1989: Promoted to detective in criminal intelligence unit. Helped investigate multi-
state gaming operation and joined special weapons and tactics teams.
- 1989 – 1991: Became administrative sergeant of intelligence unit.
- 1991 – 1995: Promoted to lieutenant and became assistant district commander.
- 1995 – 1997: Promoted to captain and moved to command 100 police employees and manage a $5.2 million budget.
- 1997 – 1999: Became assistant chief in charge of community policing.
- 1999 – 2003: Took over technical services and support unit, which runs several police offices, including records and property rooms.
- 2003 – 2005: As lieutenant colonel, oversaw the department’s administrative bureau. Managed merger of Louisville Division of Police with Jefferson County Police Department.
