Two-Wheelin’ to School Time

Hey kids: Get your walking shoes and bike tires in tip-top condition for Glendale’s Walk & Bike to School Day

Families today are busier than ever, and finding time to fit in physical activities that promote healthy exercise can be challenging. Glendale’s Walk & Bike to School Day aims to help families find a simple way to fit in a little healthy exercise, and help reduce the city’s air pollution and traffic congestion to boot.

Elementary schools citywide are being encouraged to participate in Glendale’s Walk & Bike to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

About the Program

Walk & Bike to School Day was developed to help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution around schools, while encouraging physical fitness among students.

Students will also learn various safe routes to schools designated from school officials. Other events include a helmet decorating contest, a parade, police and fire demonstrations and an obstacle course for bikers and walkers designed by Glendale Police Bike Patrol.

“This day is all about awareness and teaching families about alternative ways of travel,” says Sandy Adams, Glendale Traffic Education Manager. “We hope to motivate people to use some of these alternative modes that will reduce traffic, as well as offer a health benefit to our community.”

The Details

Posters have been sent to elementary schools throughout Glendale regarding the upcoming event, which is being held during International Walk to School Week, October 2-6. The city is also providing free flashlights to participating schools for distribution to students.

City officials recommend that students walk or bike to school with a group of friends. Kindergarteners through third-grade students should be accompanied by an adult.
