It’s Party Time! Gear up for Fiesta Glendale

As the weather starts to cool down, the celebration of Glendale’s cultural heritage heats up with the observance of Hispanic Heritage Month and this weekend’s Fiesta Glendale (September 16 and 17).

For the sixth year, the city of Glendale, along with APS, welcome Glendale residents to Historic Downtown’s Murphy Park to partake in great food, music, dance performances and activities.

This popular annual event attracts more than 15,000 attendees who laud a culture that is synonymous with the desert Southwest. The city created Fiesta Glendale to celebrate its ethnic and cultural diversity. The celebration fosters pride in Glendale’s diverse culture and an appreciation for the city’s rich ethnic history.

On the Agenda

This year’s event will have plenty to see with two stages of entertainment. The Glendale-based dance troupe Fiesta Mexicana Dance Company will wow audiences with traditional dance directed by Daniel Martinez from Mexico City. Barrio Latino, which means Latin neighborhood, will play traditional and contemporary Latin crossover music. Some of their songs have been featured in hit movies such as Mel Gibson’s Ransom and The Devil’s Own with Brad Pitt.

Other performers include mariachi groups, CPR Orchestra, Straight Up, Fire & Desire, Cascabel, Joseph Odhianubo, Marlene Marquez, Caribbean Zone and Columbian Folk Dance Group.

For the Kids

Younger event attendees will enjoy taking part in the hands-on craft projects, the rock-climbing wall and a ride on the kiddie train. And don’t forget to come hungry. There will be plenty of traditional Mexican cuisine to whet the appetite including fajitas, empanadas, panchitos, gorditos, burritos and, of course, tamales.

Murphy Park is located in the heart of Historic Downtown Glendale at 58th and Glendale avenues. Festival hours will run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. For more information, call (623) 930-2299.
