Cool Safety Tips
City officials offer these suggestions to stay safe this summer
With rising temperatures, Glendale public safety officials want you to know how to stay safe when summer temperatures climb above 110 degrees. Following these simple tips may prevent a trip to the hospital or calling 911.
- Do your daily exercise early as well as yard work and avoid being outside during the hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Drink plenty of water before, during and after any outside activity to stay hydrated.
- Limit soda, caffeine and alcohol during any outside activity.
- Wear a hat and apply sunscreen to prevent sunburn.
- Keep a cell phone nearby, and avoid the outdoors if you have been ill or are prone to heat exhaustion.
Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include nausea, general weakness, dizziness and body cramps. Cooling off, preferably indoors, and re-hydrating your body may relieve this.
Signs and symptoms of heat stroke are hot flush skin, dizziness, nausea, cramps and sometimes unconsciousness. This condition is much more serious, and may require immediate medical attention.
Safety on the Road
Everyone knows summer months mean summer vacations, and for many people that also means road trip time. Stay safe on the road and in the car by keeping these tips in mind:
- Make sure everyone is buckled. Safety belts should be used to secure people and pets.
- Never drink and drive.
- When you’re planning a long trip, always share the driving duties and be sure to not drive while fatigued.
- Be prepared with safety equipment, including a spare tire, water and a cell phone for emergencies.
- Have your car serviced before a long trip.
- Mind speed limits and other roadway signage. Remember, you have all summer, so there’s no need to rush.
