Celebrating Old in the New
A look at “Changing Places,” the upcoming fourth annual Arizona Historic Preservation Conference, and the 2006 Heritage Fair
Historic preservationists unite June 15 and 16 at the Glendale Civic Center as the fourth annual Arizona Historic Preservation Conference gets underway. Presented by the Arizona Preservation Foundation, Arizona State Historic Preservation Office, Arizona Archeological Council and the city of Glendale, this conference aims to inspire the preservation of Arizona’s heritage and history. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of sessions and will have access to exciting presentations by national, state and local guest speakers. Outstanding preservation achievements will also be recognized at the Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Awards luncheon.
What’s on the Program
This year’s conference offers several themed educational tracks. Here are just a few:
- Urban Places
- Small Town and Rural Places
- Ancient Places
- Native American Places
- Protecting Places
The event will also feature optional tours of Manistee Ranch, Sahuaro Ranch and Historic Downtown Glendale and Catlin Court as well as a silent auction and a preservation bookstore.
Guest speakers include Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs; Charles Bowden, best-selling author and contributing editor to Esquire; and Brian Fagan, an internationally renowned expert in archaeology and anthropology.
About the Awards
Since 1982, the Arizona Preservation Foundation and Arizona State Historic Preservation Office/Arizona State Parks have collaborated to present the Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Awards. These awards have recognized people, organizations and projects that represent outstanding achievements in preserving Arizona’s prehistoric and historic resources.
The goal of this award is to promote public awareness of historic preservation in Arizona, to publicly recognize varied contributions and to recognize excellence in preservation in Arizona’s communities. This year’s Grand Award winner will be announced at the conference luncheon on Friday, June 15.
About the Heritage Fair
The 2006 Heritage Fair will be held at the Glendale Civic Center on Saturday, June 17. Geared toward historic property owners throughout the Valley, the fair offers a tour of of four Catlin Court homes that have been restored, training sessions for homeowners of historic properties and booths of vendors that provide services to historic property owners.
